You’re probably aware of the influx of romantic comedies all over TV by now, all hoping to recapture the success of How I Met Your Mother. If you’re only going to give one a chance, please let that be A to Z.
Cristin Milioti finally gets her time to shine as Zelda Vasco. Because we barely got to see much of her as the titular character on How I Met Your Mother by the time she was introduced so late in the game, it is refreshing that she’s one of the leads on A to Z. Ben Feldman stars as Andrew Lofland, the hopeless romantic ironically working for a dating website. He’s pretty much Ted Mosby-lite and that’s a very good thing.
One more glaring similarity to How I Met Your Mother is obviously the voiceover by Katey Sagal. She doesn’t claim any specific connection to this new couple but if I had to guess, she’s probably Andrew’s mom. She did point out that his parents’ marriage was the source of his romanticism but unfortunately his mother died when he was young.
At one point when Andrew is trying to convince Zelda that it’s destiny that they found each other again, he actually says that their meeting is “the kind of story that we can tell our kids.” Nice little wink there.
The biggest “mystery” presented is what happens after their eight months, three weeks, five days, and one hour of dating. If this is all leading up to a break up, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world but it would be a disappointment. More than likely they probably get engaged and/or elope at that point. It’ll be fun to speculate theories along the way!
The promising supporting cast will definitely help to make the journey through this season a fun one. Lenora Crichlow was perfect as Annie on BBC’s Being Human, so I’m very happy to see her back on TV as Stephy, Zelda’s best friend since law school. She’s known to change herself according to whatever interests her boyfriend of the week.
Andrew’s friend Stu (Henry Zebrowski) hasn’t had much to work with yet, other than being caught in his lie about being a famous jazz musician when he met Stephy. Andrew’s co-workers Dinesh and Lora stole the spotlight last night with their not-so-subtle bickering about their own relationship or lack thereof.
Lea Thompson’s cameo as herself in the pilot made it that much more enjoyable. Andrew actually getting the chance to ask her about the widely suspicious existence of hoverboards was pretty funny. If the pop culture references and cameos keep up, A to Z has a long life ahead with its distinctly sweet take on the romantic comedy.
What did you think of the series premiere? Will you continue watching or are you not ready for that kind of commitment again?
