Netflix is firing on all cylinders at the moment and is churning out movies and series that are seriously grabbing the attention of subscribers and those that haven’t subscribed yet but may very well do so once they see that the streaming giant is serious about the content it’s trying to push forward. This new series will be tracking along similar lines to Starship Troopers in the idea that an alien species has sent an artifact of some sort to earth and those interest in learning more about it will be embarking upon a mission to trace the origin of the artifact so as to determine it’s purpose and the intent of those that sent it. Obviously from the trailer we can see that there’s no mention of giant bugs and the artifact does in fact land quite peacefully, though it’s yet to be seen just what’s going to happen when human beings start poking around in it as per human nature.
Katee Sackhoff is leading the cast as is evidenced by the trailer and there are several others that will be easily recognized once the series kicks off as nothing’s been spared when it comes to making this show into something special. It’s fair to state that it might take a while to get going since just jumping into the action might be a little too bold even for a Netflix feature, but thus far from the trailer it would seem that the series is bound to be something that will endure for a while at least unless it does a serious face plant early on. The effects look brilliant and the story might need a little bit of work but at the same time it looks as though it might keep our attention long enough to discover the real threat that’s posed by the alien species that sent the artifact. The idea of interstellar war is even brought up during the trailer, and the response that they might not have a choice is simply classic since it implies that as human beings we simply can’t work against our own nature no matter how hard we try.
The curiosity, the need to know, to discover, and to do something about it no matter what that is seems to be the human drive and by our very nature the reason we suffer one setback after another, but it makes for great drama. In this coming series, which is set to be released on July 25th in fact, it would seem that as far as humanity goes when it comes to our technological prowess, our old habits of meddling in things that ought not to be meddled in tends to take us down the same roads time and again. In a way you might almost think that we’d grow tired of stories like this since it seems to push a narrative that we simply don’t know enough about what we’re doing when it comes to exploring and discovering something that, to us, is brand new, but in the span of history is already old news to someone else. It’s that feeling of being behind the times, of arriving on the scene long after something has happened, that really entices people though. Much like our ancestors centuries and even millennia in the past, we want to know what happened that allowed things to become the way they are now. And when another species seems to be reaching out to try and share, subjugate, or somehow threaten our species it becomes a reason to go off and find a way to do something about it under the guise of discovering something that we’d never seen before.
Matt Goldberg from Collider would no doubt agree that Another Life is the type of story that seems to be leading us into a thriller that will promise to keep us on the edge of our toes, even if some folks seem a bit jaded and don’t think it will deliver as much as the trailer seems to indicate. The cast is already looking as though they might be easily criticized and the story, as you might guess, is something that a lot of people might say that we’ve seen before in many different ways. But giving it a chance is what’s important since from the trailer it looks as though this series could be on to something so long as people are willing to accept it and come to the understanding that while we’ve seen deep space stories before and have witnessed many a story that seeks to scare us to death it’s still unique and innovative in a way since there’s a great deal of imagery that emerges in the trailer that might pique the interests of many viewers that would care to comment on it. If nothing else it’s a new and exciting show that we’ll be sure to check out when it comes out.
