Why There Will Never Be Another Dwight Schrute on Television

The chances of having another Dwight Schrute show up on TV is kind of, well, hard to describe for many people since the idea of Dwight is a polarizing one that has some people rooting for him and others wanting to turn their backs and hope that he’ll just go away. You’ve got to hand it to Rainn Wilson, he managed to create a character that’s not universally hated but is still looked at as a rather unbalanced character that’s not there all the time. The collection of quotes that you can look at compiled by Angelica Sirotin of Odyssey should be a good measure of that since a few of them might make you arch your eyebrows and say “What?”.

Dwight was a character that a lot of people enjoyed simply because he was a caricature in many ways but he seemed very real as well. His whole persona was something that many people would try to avoid in an office setting or possibly band together in order to stand against him. But the funny thing is that Rainn Wilson became known almost exclusively as his character after a while and hasn’t really been known as anything else since then. Even during his other movie appearances in The Rocker and The Meg he’s still been seen as Dwight since the character has persisted for so long and been considered his real-life persona.

Rainn has argued long and loud that he’s nothing like his on screen character but many people still seem stuck on the idea that he’s little more than an extension of Dwight and someone that’s basically as creepy and as nerdy as the character. It’s likely a good thing that he’s not however since there are a few things about Dwight that don’t make sense as Gregory Thompson from ScreenRant would be able to tell you. There’s a good reason why there will never be another Dwight Schrute on TV and it likely has to do with the fact that the character is better off being one of a kind and is better thought of as someone that was left in The Office’s story line. Plus, thinking about it this way, Dwight is something of an irritant that you can’t help but think would have been fired long ago given that he’s the kind of guy that manages to cause a lot of unrest in the office setting and is horribly easy to manipulate. The many times that he and Jim have gone around is evidence enough of this since he’s been led by the nose through so many pranks that it makes a person wonder how really intelligent the character is.

Apparently though Dwight has been seen as something of a good person and a victim of Jim’s pranks in the past since he’s out to be the best person he can be and do whatever it takes to make sure that he does as much as he can with his life. Unless you’ve seen the show it’s hard to equate Dwight with the word ‘good’ anything unless you’re thinking that he’s good at being kind of a pain in the butt and good at being a very weird and obstinate person. The fact that the character is so insanely egotistic is kind of funny since he has no real reason to be. He’s not a bad worker but he’s not exactly at the top of his game most times, he’s horrible at karate no matter how good he thinks he is, and people tend to give into Dwight and his demands or requests more often just to get him to go away. In short he’s kind of a mediocre human being that isn’t all bad but is just good enough at what he does to have an ego that’s big enough to make him think he’s one of the most intelligent and interesting people to walk the earth. Of course that’s an argument as to why there SHOULDN’T be another Dwight on TV, not why there won’t be.

The whole idea of there not being another Dwight, ever, to come along after this character is that he’s just too hard to match. From the energy he brings to the office, which can be positive or negative depending on his mood, to the manner in which he interacts with his fellow employees, Dwight is one of a kind, thankfully, and can’t be replaced by pretenders or by anyone that’s been inspired to act as he does. Plus Rainn put so much effort into creating this guy that it seems fair to say that he was trying to make sure that no one would be able to replicate this character. If that was the goal then he accomplished it obviously since it’s easy to state that there won’t ever be another like Dwight.
