The explanation that Mike Sprague from MovieWeb gives for the reason that the Vega Brothers movie never happened is pretty simple, Tarantino seems to have lost interest in it. There is a shelf life for some ideas that are formulated that comes and goes, though it’s kind of saddening to think that this movie will never happen now, at least not under Tarantino, which means probably never. Who was excited for this, really? It would have been something that might have explored just who Vincent and Vic Vega really were since it would have likely taken place in Amsterdam where Vincent was taking care of business for his boss Marcellus. The idea was that Vic would come to visit and as a result their weekend and what happened would be the plot of the movie. It would seem like a very open and easily-developed plot line that could include a large number of things that fans would love to see. Plus, we might have even been given the chance to see a ‘royale with cheese’ or a glass of beer as Vincent was talking about in Pulp Fiction.
Plus, it almost seems as though it would have been worth it to put in the matter of Vincent’s car and just who decided to key it once he got back to the states. These little story lines that never went beyond the anecdotal stage would have been great to see next to the bigger picture since quite honestly it would seem that anecdotes were a big part of the Vega brothers’ stories, and it would have been nice to go into a little more depth with either one of them to see just where the story could go. Sadly though this seems like it will never happen now since Tarantino is already thinking of retirement and as we’ve all seen Madsen and Travolta are getting older as the years move on and definitely looking their age. Using CGI is of course possible, but it would seem that Quentin wouldn’t want to do that to his characters or the actors, as it doesn’t seem to be the best idea.
But hey, the characters as they stand in the movies now are still impressive. Vic is by far the more aggressive of the two since he’s a complete psychopath and doesn’t seem capable of having an emotion that isn’t tinged by madness of some sort. Vincent on the other hand seems ruled more by the act of remaining chill, even if he needs a needle in his arm to do it on occasion. Both of them are calm, cool, collected individuals most times, but even from a viewer standpoint one can feel the violence radiating from every action they take, whether they’re standing still or not. The manner in which they both meet their end seems fitting in a way but was still surprising since to get rid of such vibrant, if psychotic, characters in such a fashion seems like something that only Tarantino could get away with for a while. But kudos to him for keeping us on our toes, since having Butch kill Vincent and Mr. Orange kill Vic were the kind of surprises that made it clear that everyone was bound to go down eventually. Somehow Vic’s death was a little more appealing since the guy was into torture and maiming in a way that suggested that he thought of it as just another part of his average day. Vincent wasn’t a saint to be honest, but he seemed to have a few more principles than his brother, despite accidentally shooting someone in the face. But being killed by Butch was something that seemed to just slap people in the face while saying ‘Ha, he got what deserved.’ Well played, but it was still a shock.
So, we could sit here and lament a movie that will never be made but should have been, but let’s be realistic about it. Pulp Fiction was a movie that was great for its time and it’s still revered today since it was groundbreaking in its own way, but the Vega Brothers movie likely would have detracted just a little too much from the overall story while holding tightly to the small tidbits that had already been established. Follow that? The minor things that Vincent spoke of and his duties to Marcellus were really all the story had to go on. It’s true that developing the rest would have been exceedingly simple it would seem, but at the same time if it was going to happen it should have been done a while ago. As of now that shelf life has expired it would seem and any attempt to do it now would be a less than stellar attempt, and as we’ve seen, Quentin isn’t into making movies that people will agree is less than his best.Somehow Vic’s death
