Upon its television debut, Sisters Wives became TLC’s biggest series debut since Cake Boss. With over 2 million viewers, the one-hour premiere of the reality television series set off a candid look into the interesting polygamist family of the Browns. The show revolves around Kody Brown, his four wives, and their 18 children as they try to fit into a society that frowns at polygamy.
Sister Wives has garnered millions of fans since its September 2010 premiere. 18 seasons and 209 episodes later, the show still wields significant power among major reality TV shows. Meanwhile, anticipation for the next season is high, considering that the Brown family is no longer what it used to be. Keep reading to catch up on all 18 seasons of Sister Wives and where to watch them.
What Is Sister Wives All About?
One man, three wives, and 18 children, Sister Wives is an unscripted television series documenting the polygamous life of the Brown family. Kody Brown’s journey into polygamy began long before TLC picked up the show. His first marriage was with Meri (née Barber) in 1990. Three years later, he introduced his second wife, Janelle (née Schriever) to the family and Christine (née Allred) followed in 1994.
The foursome lived happily for 16 years before Brown introduced a fourth wife, Robyn in 2010. Sister Wives season 1 began filming when Brown was courting Robyn and the cameras continued to roll after the marriage. The Brown family also features 18 children. Meri has one child while Janelle and Christine have six children each. Robyn also has five children but three were born during her previous marriage to David Preston Jessop.
Sister Wives was introduced to television audiences when polygamy was getting more attention in American pop culture. While polygamy was considered illegal by law, the Browns strived to create public awareness about the system of marriage and ultimately fight against the prejudice polygamist homes often face. The Brown family also filed a lawsuit against the state of Utah over its unfavorable polygamy laws. While the family prevailed in the district court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit dismissed the case in 2016.
Three Of Kody Brown’s Wives Have Left
Kody Brown began his polygamous journey with Meri, Janelle, and Christine who worked with him for years to build a united home with their 13 kids. Therefore, introducing a fourth wife (Robyn) 16 years later sparked mixed feelings. The once-loving unit became rife with insecurities and doubts that disrupted the balance of the Brown family. Also, Brown’s favoritism towards Robyn sowed the seed of discord that tore his family apart.
Christine was the first to leave after announcing that her relationship with Kody Brown had been dissolved in November 2021. She moved on with her new boyfriend David Woolley whom she later married in October 2023. Janelle left the Brown family in December 2022 while Meri went public with the dissolution of her marriage to Brown on January 10, 2023. Meri’s relationship with Brown was rocky from the beginning of the show and there were speculations about her divorce before it happened.
Did TLC Cancel Sister Wives?
With Kody Brown left with just one wife, fans have asked if Sister Wives will return for another run. Sister Wives season 18 premiered on August 20, 2023, with a dysfunctional family and lots of drama. Admittedly, the Browns are no longer polygamists as Robyn is the only wife left and this changes the main purpose of the show. However, TLC has not officially pulled the plug on Sister Wives.
Another threat to the future of the reality show is the sudden death of Garrison Brown, Janelle and Kody’s 25-year-old son. Garrison took his own life on March 5, 2024, and fans of the show have wondered if the burden of being in the spotlight took a toll on him. Additionally, the relationship between Garrison and his father gradually waned over the years. With Sister Wives season 19 already filmed before tragedy struck the family, it might be insensitive to air it.
