It’s kind of hard to say what happened to Delta Burke without mentioning the struggles she’s been through in her life. The weight gain that she experienced throughout her career was one obvious struggle that she had to deal with, and having diabetes was another. But throughout her career Delta was known, to start with, as one of the most popular women around. She had a career in films and TV that was just amazing as she was sought after by many fans and idolized by others. For a while Delta was one of the biggest names in Hollywood, but like all things that too passed and eventually she became a running joke unfortunately that everyone decided to take advantage of. She had her shining moments in front of the screen both before and after her real issues started but lately it doesn’t seem like she’s been seen around all that much. Her bio states that she’s still active but to date it seems as though she just kind of disappeared.
Here’s just a few roles you might remember best.
Designing Women
It could be argued that this was the show that really made her into the star that she became. The show was a straight up comedy for the most part and entertained people in the way that only an almost all-female cast could, meaning that a lot of the comedy was biting, sharp, and witty enough to make people’s eyes pop out of their skull. As a female-led comedy it was one of the best since the attitudes of the women conspired to be something that no man would dare stand up against and any wise man would give full respect to. As Suzanne, Burke was perhaps the most self-centered and egotistical of the bunch, but she played her role perfectly since she was the one that didn’t have to care what other people thought so long as she helped out with the family business and didn’t annoy people too much. All in all this show was something that some folks might have watched when they were bored and others watched religiously because it was just that funny. It put Burke on the map despite the fact that she’d had a nice long career before the show started up.
What Women Want
If you’re looking for a misogynistic comedy then this one should fit the bill without a doubt. Mel Gibson plays a man that fancies himself a womanizer and he is for the most part, it’s just that he can’t tell that women are just flat out tired of him no matter that he can charm them into just about anything. When he gains the ability to read women’s minds however he’s freaked out initially, as most of us guys probably would be, and then eventually he begins to listen and understand just why women react to him in the various ways that they do. What’s funny however, and kind of insulting in a way, is that his two assistants, of which Burke is one, seem to have not a single thought between them when Gibson stands in front of them and attempts to ‘hear’ what they’re thinking. It’s just blank, as though the TV is on but all that’s there is white noise. Now some might be offended by that but it does manage to give a bit of insight as to the realization that not all women are constantly thinking at a million miles a minute. Of course on the other end of the spectrum it means that some women are just essentially brainless. It’s a revelation that only a comedy could make and get away with it to be honest.
Drop Dead Diva
Anything with the word ‘diva’ in it seems like it would suit Burke. But honestly and truly she seems to have been very excited to have been considered for this show and displayed a great deal of gratitude for it. Burke has kind of gotten a bad rap over the years for things that weren’t entirely in her control, and her career has suffered for it a bit. But really she’s proven herself again and again to be a talented actress that doesn’t give up and doesn’t quit as she keeps on coming back. Even with her struggles with weight gain and her diabetes she’s been doing what she can to make her life work and stay relevant to the TV and film industries.
If those were the only problems she had then she might have been able to deal and keep going, but apparently she’s been a hoarder in the past as well. While she’s gotten help for this disorder she has also related that at one time she had no less than 27 storage units filled with belongings, as she couldn’t possibly fit them all in her house. She hasn’t been seen in anything since around 2012. As of now though she’s been heard to say that while there’s nothing on the horizon for her life is going good and she’s happy with where she’s at.
