Disobedience, starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams, will be coming out in April this year but it’s already been reviewed at the Toronto International Film Festival as of last year. The story follows a woman that was shunned from her community for her attraction to a childhood friend. When she returns it begins to cause all sorts of problems as her friend is now married and supposedly happy. This film allows the audience to delve into the traditional Jewish practices that are odd to some but are important to various communities that still practice in this manner.
It should be an interesting movie.
5. People might learn a little more about religion.
A lot of us don’t tend to think twice about a friendly pat on the back or just a simple hug hello, but to the Jewish community, some of them that still practice the traditional ways at least, a woman touching a man and vice versa is not allowed unless they are married or are family in some recognizable way. It is believed that women and men touching, when they aren’t related, is a prelude to a sexual act which is not allowed.
4. It gives an interesting look into sexuality.
Despite the level of tolerance that exists in the world as of now it is still noted that some people are highly resistant to the changing landscape as more and more people begin to accept that homosexuality is a very normal part of life. In the religion and the community depicted in the film however it is something to be guarded against and even shunned it would seem, which means that the two women cannot be anything other than platonic friends.
3. It will be a stretch for Weisz and McAdams.
They’ve both acted in dramas and other films but this one still seems like it will be a true test of their comfort levels and how far they are willing to take their craft. Plus, given that they are both well accomplished actresses it stands to reason that it might not be a true test of their talents, but more or less a test of the passion they can show to their acting. So far it looks as though they both are capable of going out on a limb to complete a role.
2. Sadly, some male viewers might get excited.
This is the downside of any movie such as this as a lot of the story will be negated in the minds of some viewers as they wait for the ‘good stuff’ to happen. The good stuff is really the entire movie as it gives a very detailed and in-depth look at what goes on in the community and how this budding relationship will be affected by it. Hopefully those looking for a few steamy scenes will be caught up in the movie and forget the kind of lewd thoughts they approach the movie with.
1. It makes a bold promise of a deep and enriching story.
So far just from the trailer it looks like a movie that can offer a very well-scripted story and something that will prove to be memorable for those that watch it. The movie might even clear up a few questions about the Jewish community if it’s played out correctly.
It could be an interesting movie.
