Stephen Colbert is just as on top of the Cambridge Analytica Data scandal as anyone and he’s just as determined to make it look like the idiocy it’s become. On the one hand you have Facebook that’s been accused of simply handing over the personal information of roughly 50 million users to Cambrige Analytica, and then you have the revelation that the company belongs to Donald Trump. Facebook has lost up to $36 billion dollars to this point and when you would expect its headman, Mark Zuckerberg, to say something. Strangely enough he’s been completely silent, perhaps because he has no idea what to say to these millions of people or maybe because he’s in shock as to how much has been lost.
Even worse is the fact that Alexander Nix isn’t making it sound any better since he’s taking credit for the gathering of so much data that was used for Trump’s campaign. Many people might say that there’s not enough of a connection to really implicate anyone, but the connections that aren’t seen are so easily assumed that denying them is pointless at this time. This kind of a scandal, when discovered, is enough to ruin people in a manner that starts to make individuals fall like dominoes when everything starts to be given the big reveal. The only question now is just what is going to happen. The only answer that anyone can give sadly is, nothing as of right now. Zuckerberg has shown that he’s resourceful and can create something out of nothing, and Trump and all his schemes throughout the years have proven that he’s either extremely lucky or just knows how the system works and can insulate himself just enough from any illicit dealings that might have his fingerprints on them at some point.
Facebook is of course a great matter of important to a lot of people simply because it’s where they go to check up on people they haven’t seen in a while, exchange messages, pictures, and just enjoy each others company when they can’t be right next to each other. Our reliance upon social media has in fact allowed us to get closer to others but it has also been shown to cripple people in a manner of speaking as the more personal and private information that is put on FB, the more likely it is that someone can grab hold of it and use it to their own ends. And someone that knows the system, such as Cambridge Analytica, could possibly find a way to gather information in various ways that people would never fully recognize. That’s the scary part about social media, that we freely give so much information over the web that we wouldn’t give anywhere else.
Hopefully some action will be taken by Zuckerberg since this happens to be his baby that’s been handing out so much private information to Cambridge Analytica. It’d be a wonder if this continues to happen if people will still trust FB after learning that there’s a supposed revolving door policy when it comes their private information.
