If you forgot what Macho Man Randy Savage sounded like then his effort at doing a cartoon voice for Space Ghost then this clip should remind you just how awesome he was. His growling voice and ability to interrupt and insult his opponents was something that always managed to electrify and entertain his fans. Playing Space Ghost’s grandpa though is kind of odd, not to mention that you could easily think that it was going to devolve into something more akin to the WWE. The Macho Man was great in his time but in cartoons it was easy to kind of lose that edge that he was so famous for in the ring.
Before guys like Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock came around, Macho Man was kind of one of the premier trash-talkers that just loved to cause trouble sometimes. Like all of the wrestlers he went between heel and good guy constantly and was friends with Hulk Hogan when he wasn’t feuding with him over one thing or another. But like all older wrestlers he was put on notice when the newer, stronger talent started coming in. It was hard to see Macho Man starting to get old but when it happened he was no longer the same dynamic athlete he’d been in the past. When he joined WCW things only seemed to get worse since his character was misrepresented in a number of ways. His glory days were far behind him at that point despite the fact that he was still known far and wide as a great wrestler. When it was discovered that he and Terry Bollea, aka Hulk Hogan, hadn’t been seeing eye to eye for a while things just kept spiraling out of control.
It’s pretty sad when your favorite heroes start getting old and fading out, but while Savage was waning in the popularity department he was still considered an icon for his days in the WWE and for his appearances elsewhere. It seems a fair bet that a lot of people never knew that he lent his voice to the Space Ghost cartoon, nor that he did a lot of things outside of his wrestling career. It seems fair to wonder if anyone remembers him for anything but wrestling and the Slim Jims commercials he did for a while. He also appeared in a movie called Ready to Rumble, as well as the first Spider-Man film with Tobey Maguire. Randy Savage was someone that you couldn’t help but emulate once you heard his voice since it was so infectious. Seriously, so many people would still seek to copy him that it’s amazing to listen to.
Unfortunately Randy passed away back in 2011. The cause was cardiovascular disease, but he’d lived a rather hard life for some time before the end. Like a lot of wrestler’s he’d done a lot, seen a lot, and experienced a lot that wasn’t always that great but was still part of his career. At the very least he hadn’t faded from memory completely by the time his end came. He was and still is an icon in pop culture. Oooooh yeeeaaah!
