Walking Dead 1.06 “TS-19” Recap

Jenner throws Rick’s confession of hopelessness in his face in front of everyone. Rick says it’s still his job to keep hope alive. Jenner says that only Andrea gets it: this is our extinction event. Isn’t it more compassionate to hold your loved ones until the clock runs down?

Apparently Shane doesn’t think so, because he grabs a rifle and points it at Jenner’s head. Shane doesn’t kill Jenner but he does fire at every piece of equipment in sight until Rick wrestles the gun from him and knocks him to the ground.

Rick accuses Jenner of still having hope. He didn’t bolt like the rest of the other CDC doctors. Didn’t take the easy way out. Jenner says he only stayed because he made a promise to his wife, who also happens to be Test Subject 19. At least Jenner had a chance. Rick wants one too.

Jenner opens the central doors, but reminds them the exits are still locked down and he can’t open them. Four and a half minutes left.

The group runs, but Jenner tells Rick the day will come when he won’t be grateful for having this choice. Then he leans in and whispers something mysterious into Rick’s ear.

Jacqui (Jeryl Prescott) and Andrea choose to stay behind and die inside. Dale tries to change Andrea’s mind as the men hack at the external windows with the axes. Shane shoots at the glass. It still won’t break.

Carol pulls out the grenade Rick took from Atlanta out of her bag, which she found while doing his laundry (saved by the anti-feminist delegation of women’s work!). Rick blows the window open.

Dale pulls a mind on Andrea by choosing to stay and die with her.

Rick and the group head outside to the Walkers, blowing undead heads off. Daryl decapitates one with his axe. They head back into the cars. Dale comes out the window with Andrea.

Jenner and Jacqui hold hands in the last ten seconds of the countdown. The timer runs out. Everyone takes cover as the CDC building explodes (and I mean EXPLODES).

We cut to the faces of all of our onlooking survivors as Bob Dylan sings “Tomorrow is a Long Time”. The cars pull away. One last shot of the fiery building: a towering inferno of fire and destruction. The camera pans up into the thick black smoke in the sky. Fade to black.
