You can easily imagine that if there isn’t enough Venom in the upcoming Venom movie then fans are not going to be pleased. Ever since the maniacal villain came in as the black costume that sought to consume Spider-Man in 1984 he’s been something of the antithesis to the webslinger and a creature unlike just about anything in the Marvel universe. Venom wasn’t even a fully developed character until around 1988 when it merged with Eddie Brock and became one of Spider-Man’s most dangerous villains. In fact if not for the writing that made him into kind of a joke at times Venom could have been one of the deadliest and most inescapable villains that the wall crawler had to deal with.
Any fan that’s been reading comics since the 80’s would know by now that Venom was no joke, as having bonded with Eddie Brock the symbiote gave the emotionally-damaged Brock the means to strike back at the one person that he believed had caused his downfall. So yes, Brock was kind of unstable, but after bonding with the symbiote things only got worse. The unfortunate part at this point is that in Spider-Man 3, despite Topher Grace’s disastrous outing as the villain, you still got the chance to see more of Venom simply because he was one of the major villains of the movie. The problem with that was that no one would ever think that Topher Grace could ever be that kind of tough guy given that he’s almost always been seen as the skinny guy from that 70’s show who was trying to act tough and just couldn’t pull it off.
So then you bring in Tom Hardy, who’s shown that he can play roles in which he’s just the toughest guy around, but has also shown the capacity for a more troubled side that could bring the character of Eddie Brock into greater focus. But with Brock you’ve still got to have the symbiote, and from all sources that have been covering the development of the movie it seems that Venom won’t be shown until near the end of the film when he has to fight off the big bad, a government agent that is using another symbiote to take him out. That seems like it could really make a lot of fans feel cheated since the chance to see Venom on the big screen is something that a lot of people have been pining for since Topher almost ruined the character years before. Of course if the story is good enough there might be some forgiveness since Venom is a more well-developed character at this point than many people seem to realize.
It’s also just a bit confusing why Spider-Man wouldn’t be anywhere within this story since he and Venom have had some truly amazing battles over the years and it could have perked the movie up a bit and gotten a lot more people on board. At this point though it seems as though the creators want to focus on Venom and nothing else. If that’s the case it would be nice to see more of him.
