The real art of the sale is that the average salesman believes in what they’re selling even if they’re selling nothing. That’s right, the belief of the salesperson is what really matters in the world of sales. If a person can talk quick enough and slick enough to convince people that what they’re buying is worth the effort and the money then that salesperson has done their job. They’ve forced the person to invest in the words they’re speaking and not so much the fact that they might actually need what they’re buying. It’s a confusing back and forth game that doesn’t end until the salesperson or the individual gives up, and far too often it’s the buyer that will throw in the towel and give in for reasons of their own.
Despite what you see in the movies, salespeople are not always this slick.
5. Glengarry Glen Ross
Alec Baldwin is a beast in this clip. He makes no apologies and he absolutely shreds the office staff without any effort to explain just why he’s doing it other than to motivate them to close every deal they make and take the customer for everything that they can. The brutality of his speech is such that most people would likely get up and walk out and probably be hounded while doing it.
4. The Boiler Room
Working as a broker can be a brutal prospect if you’re not ready for the life. It’s a fast-paced, unforgiving, and very demanding existence that isn’t for those that want to be nice and respectful to everyone at all times. Despite the fact that the movies play it up quite a bit the life of a broker is very busy and hardly ever stable unless you’re willing to undercut the next person.
3. The Wolf of Wall Street
This was greed at one of its best times in real life when Jordan Belfort decided to make his way into the world. He took no prisoners and made few friends along with a lot of enemies. Even if the movie wasn’t entirely accurate to his life and business it gave an insight to a guy that would sell out his own family if that was what needed to happen. Of course, a lot of the movie is played up quite a bit.
2. Iron Man
Tony Stark is the guy that pitches it like it is, not as people would like to hear it. That’s refreshing in a way but it’s also kind of unnerving since his arrogance and his attitude sometimes put people off in a very big way. One thing that does happen to come with his genius however is that he knows how to talk to people and he knows how to sell himself and his products.
1. Tommy Boy
So we’ve gone from the most high-powered to the most blue-collar working class salesman at this point. Tommy Boy wasn’t the ideal salesperson, nor was he even the smartest of the bunch. Instead he was the guy that was doing honest work and really trying to do some good for his community. Plus, focus on that word ‘honest’. He’s the only one in the bunch that used such a quality on a regular basis.
Salespeople aren’t evil or even that bad, but some of them are very ruthless in their pursuit of the sale.
