Italy has produced some of the world’s best loved and most talented actors and actresses, with Sophia Loren being just one example. Therefore, it makes sense that Italy can also produce some outstanding films. This is certainly the case in 2017 as fans of Italian movies have a lot to look forward to this year with films of all genres set for release. Here are five of the top Italian films of 2017.
Fai Bei Sogni
The title of this film translates as ‘sweet dreams’. Massimo has an idyllic childhood until it is shattered when his mother dies. As an adult, he has to face his traumatic past and does so with the support of his doctor, Elisa. The film is directed by Marco Bellocchio and stars Bérénice Bejo, Valerio Mastandrea, and Fabrizio Gifuni. Fai Bei Sogna was released in February 2017.
Call Me by Your Name
When an America student comes to stay at the Cliffside mansion of his parents on the Italian Riviera, an American-Italian teenage boy begins a romance. This is set to be one of the most romantic films of 2017. Call Me by Your Name is directed by Luca Guadagnino and is set in 1983. The cast includes Elena Bucci, Vanda Capriolo and Amira Casar. The planned date for the release of this movie is November 27, 2017.
Perfetti Sconosciuti
In English, the title of this film translates ‘perfect strangers’ and this is a very fitting name for this comedy. When a group of friends goes to a restaurant to enjoy a nice meal together, they decide to play a game. Every time a person receives a text or social media message, they must share it with the rest of the group. It seems a good idea at the time because they are all good friends and should have nothing to hide. However, the events of the evening soon cause trouble. Directed by Paolo Genovese, the cast of this film includes Giuseppe Battiston, Anna Foglietta, and Marco Giallini.
La Migliore Offerta
This romantic drama translates as ‘The Best Offer’ and is directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. Virgil Goodman is an auctioneer and art collector. When he is hired by a young woman to sell her dead parents’ art collection, he falls in love. Strangely, because she suffers from agoraphobia, she will not show herself to him and will only communicate while hidden behind the wall of the luxurious villa where she lives. The main roles in this film are played by Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturges, and Sylvia Hoeks.
Le Grande Bellezza
Le Grande Bellezza, or ‘The Great Beauty’, is directed by Paolo Sorrentino. A writer who was once great looks back over his life as it is something he considers beautiful. The film is something of a visual extravaganza as it takes you through a trip of modern Rome. The scenes are well composed and the filming techniques take this film up a notch. The cast of Le Grande Belleza includes Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone, and Sabrina Ferilli. It was released on March 14, 2017 despite coming out in 2013.
