The Top Five Cinematographers in Hollywood Right Now

Actors, producers, and directors–they get most of the credit in any movie, especially from the layperson. However that may be, we all know that making a movie involves a hundred set of hands, each of which plays a crucial role in the process. One of these roles is that of cinematographer, the person who oversees all the camera work that brings the frames and pictures that we, as movie viewers, ultimately find ourselves in. We owe much to them for capturing the scenes that we love in any movie. And so we’ve listed the top 5 cinematographers actively making movies in Hollywood right now. You may not know their names, but you’ll surely recognize their works.

1. Emmanuel Lubezki

Mexican cinematographer Lubezki has been around for a while. His last few works have been some of Hollywood’s award-winning best, including The Revenant, Gravity, and Birdman. This is the short list of his expertise though because he’s also got so much more under his belt. We can thank Lubezki for movies such as Reality Bites, A Little Princess, A Walk in the Clouds, Great Expectations, Ali, and Children of Men among many others. He has a new project that’s just been announced, The Devil’s Teeth, and it’s definitely something worth looking into.

2. Matthew Jensen

The TV cinematographer has done some of our favorite TV shows including Game of Thrones, Ray Donovan, and True Blood. However, many will be impressed to find out that he’s the director of photography for recent blockbuster Wonder Woman. The film’s success was completely unprecedented, and we owe a lot of it to the talents of Jensen combined with the rest of the cast and crew. He was also the cinematographer for 2015’s Fantastic Four, another great superhero film. It might be a trend for him, but as of now, he doesn’t have any upcoming superhero film. At least not yet.

3. Claudio Miranda

Miranda has given us a wide range of films throughout his career. The award-winning cinematographer gave us Tom Cruise’s Oblivion, Life of Pi, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Tron Legacy. While his cinematographer credits may be a shorter list than some, he’s considered to be one of the best in Hollywood. Miranda has a movie coming out in October based on the true story of the fire that took the lives of 19 firemen in Prescott, Arizona in 2013, Only the Brave.

4. Wally Pfister

We’ll be forever grateful to Pfister for giving us the Batman movies that will always be our favorites. Pfister’s work on The Dark Night trilogy is nothing short of incredible, but that’s just three of the many other greats he’s done so far. Pfister was director of photography for movies such as Inception, The Prestige, The Italian Job, and Memento. While he hasn’t done any cinematography work since the last Batman installment, we’re seeing him now on the director’s chair.

5. Matthew Libatique

Libatique’s legacy will probably be forever solidified with the award-winning movie, Black Swan. However, he’s a much-demanded cinematographer, and it’s evident with the movies that he continues to do. Libatique’s cinematography credits include Straight Outta Compton, Noah, Iron Man and Iron Man 2, Requiem for a Dream, and The Fountain. He has a movie coming out called Mother! starring Jennifer Lawrence and another project, A Star Is Born, in post production.
