One of my favorite things about The Real Housewives of Atlanta is that it very rarely lets the cast get too far apart before having them pulled back together. There may be different factions based on height and propensity for shade throwing, but group functions still occur fairly regularly and you’ll find each of the cast members interacting with one another accordingly. Special circumstances can get in the way, notably Kim giving birth, but if you sign on to The Real Housewives of Atlanta, you’ll have to deal with the other five ladies quite regularly.
After giving the wives a post-Africa episode to get away from one another, the show brought a majority of them back together for Cynthia’s one-year anniversary party, which ended up being a bit of a hot mess. Overbudget and lacking in any stimulating activity (besides endless Ciroc), the party brought back bad memories of the wedding, where Mal and Peter continued to snipe. And shock and surprise, Cynthia all but defended Peter’s dickish behavior while coming down hard on Mal; I think they both need to grow up and learn how to, at least, be civil, but it’s pathetic how much Cynthia kowtows to him. She lies for him (i.e. she told Mal how much she wanted a big party) and never, ever checks his behavior the way she does with Mal, letting him talk all kinds of mess about her and jumping all over Mal from word one. I get that Cynthia wants her marriage to work, but does she want a marriage this volatile? Just out of spite to the people that thought you’d divorce? Why be miserable to prove other people wrong?
I guess Kithe’s words were right. If Cynthia want to be miserable, let her be miserable. Just don’t come crying about how awful Peter is when the two of you divorce.
Also at the party, Marlo demonstrated a sign of schizophrenia by “not remembering” the fight with Sheree and using a gay slur. There’s defending yourself and there’s what Marlo did, condescendingly assuring Lawrence that she didn’t say the slur and not to believe everything you hear. Like…what? For one, it’s on camera and he’ll eventually see how big of a liar you are, so this little plan to make Sheree look dumb just ended up making you look worse than you already did, if that were possible. Marlo posted an “apology” online after that episode aired, but I’d have so much more respect for her if she manned up and came clean to Lawrence. It wouldn’t excuse the horrible thing she said, of course. It would, though, show a little contrition and that she understood how awful what she said was, but Marlo is a delusional gold digger with nary a toe touched down in real life, so I doubt she concerns herself with the problems of the “little people”.
One of the wives not to make it to the party was Kim, still steaming over Cynthia’s comments in Africa. Kim was too busy pontificating about her deteriorating relationship with Sweetie, after the latter continued to lag around on the job. Last week, I speculated that Sweetie may have wanted out and used her passive aggression to A) get back at Kim for treating her poorly and B) hint that she did want out. It seems that Kim may be feeling the same way, in addition to bringing up their weird boundary issues. It can be hard to work with a friend or a family member and if you don’t have firm boundaries from day one, it gets even harder to go back and implement them going forward. We’ve not really seen Kim try other ways of changing their relationship, apart from yelling louder, though, but considering all the life change she’s went through, it may be best for them to cut their losses professionally to save their friendship.
I just know that treating another human being like that isn’t cute and hopefully Kim learned that before getting another assistant. And can she be any more helpless? Kim has four working limbs and should be able to do things for herself; an assistant is to help make your job easier, not make it to where you literally don’t have to lift a finger.
The Real Housewives of Atlanta got together to celebrate Cynthia’s first year of marriage, but instead of being a jovial, lively atmosphere, it only reminded everybody that they’re still a long way from being happy. A year may have passed since the wedding, but the same issues remain, from Peter’s controlling, angry nature to Mal’s need to make a comment to Cynthia’s inability to grow a backbone and directing her frustration at the wrong people. It was one of the better episodes of the season, however, balancing a few minor storylines (Bryson getting arrested, Phaedra and the funeral home) with the party that brought the wives together. Each of The Real Housewives of Atlanta may be dramatic on her own, but get a room of ’em together, liquor included, and it turns into a catty, backbiting good time.

-I was never much of a Gregg fan, but I loved everything he had to say to Bryson after picking him up from jail. Here’s hoping it sinks in.
-Phaedra practicing embalming was simultaneously morbid and adorable. How, I don’t know, but it was fun.
