The Voice Season 8 Episode 4 Review: “The Blind Auditions, Part 4”

The Voice

The blind auditions continued to drag on last night in another two-hour episode of The Voice, which followed the same old pattern. We would hear a singer’s sob story, they would take the stage and give a solid performance, the coaches would battle it out, and the singer would pick a coach, usually the person we knew they’d pick all along. The only variable that changes from episode to episode is what crazy things the coaches do to try to sway contestants, which, admittedly, can be entertaining, but at this point in the competition, even that is losing its value. With only a few more spots open on each team, the blind auditions will be wrapping up next week, allowing us to finally move on.

Each team is starting to shape up, with the coaches aiming to diversify their team as much as possible this season. Unfortunately, they have not been diversifying their pitches. I’ve lost track of how many contestants have been told that there is no one else like them in the competition, that they have what it takes to win, and honestly, if I see Blake do the finger pointing thing one more time, I might go crazy. Also, side note to the coaches: not everyone can win this competition so stop telling average people that they’re going to go far.

With that said, there were a few decent performances last night. Like usual, the best was saved for last, with Corey Kent White taking the stage. His vocals were strong, and he’s a got the cute ‘white guy with guitar” thing going for him which usually takes people far in these types of competitions. It’s no surprise that he ended up on Team Blake, with his country background. Blake also picked up another contender in Brian Johnson, who has loved music all his life despite being bullied because of his voice and weight in high school (he definitely won saddest sob story of the night). He was able to convey a lot of emotion in his performance, which bodes well for him in the competition.

The only other standout performance of the night came from Jeremy Gaynor, who is a lead male vocalist for the West Point band. His soulful performance was enough to make all four judges turn, but it was ultimately Christina who he chose. Christina also picked up Koryn Hawthorne, Katelyn Read, and Ameera Delandro, all of whom will probably get knocked out during the battle rounds.

Along with his two promising additions of the night, Blake also added Bay Brooks and Brenna Yaeger to his team. For Pharrell, it was a slow night with only two contestants joining his team, Briar Jonnee and Ashley Morgan. At the moment, him and Blake have the strongest teams overall, but anything can happen in the next few rounds. Adam gained a few contestants who were easily forgettable, Lexi Davila, John Bastone, and Jack Gregori.

There were a few laughs in last night’s episode, especially when Christina called out Pharrell for his ‘limp walk’ and the other coaches tried to imitate it. Adam and Blake’s love/hate relationship also continued to amuse, with Adam making a pact with Blake only to break it later in the night. Without these four as coaches, The Voice would be nothing. And even with them, the blind auditions are getting repetitive. At least they’re almost done.
