The Voice Season 12 Top Ten Performances – We’re Coming Down to The Wire!

The Voice Season 12 Top Ten Performances - Lauren

These are Future Grammy-winning Women!

I have Lauren on this page because while this top ten performance wasn’t a favorite I’ve no doubt she’ll be one day be picking up a Grammy for a country music category!

Vanessa Ferguson – “Doo Wop (That Thing) by Lauryn Hill

Coach Alicia Keys had to call Lauryn Hill to get permission to do this song.  That alone shows how much faith she has in Vanessa.  Vanessa did not disappoint!

Wow! If you don’t follow rap you may not realize just how difficult a performance this was to pull off!  However, if you watch The Voice you know how amazing it is that it got on the show at all!

Lilli Passero – “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole

The fact that someone doing a jazz standard is in the top ten is incredible! N one has ever gotten this far doing this kind of music!

In that dress, with that voice, doing that song, the Grammy for best contemporary jazz performance goes to Lilli Passero!

My Least Favorite of The Voice Season 12 Top Ten Performances

At this point there aren’t any awful performances – there just aren’t.  These are just the ones I liked the least.

Jesse Larson – “Jungle Love” by The Time

My initial reaction to this was to yell at Coach Adam Levine (through the TV) that this was a terrible song choice! For those (like me) who know the actual song this is sacrilege!  However, what if I didn’t know the song? Going back and re-watching the  performance it’s cute.  For one, Jesse is relaxed and moving around.  That’s a huge improvement.  It’s still not the best vocally, but that’s because “Jungle Love” isn’t really about the vocals to begin with.  The one good thing I can say about this performance is that Jesse really does play the heck out his guitar!

Aliyah Moulden –  “Jealous” by Labrinth

This was an exploitive heartbreaking performance.  The backstory of it is that Aliyah is the only one her siblings who didn’t know her father before he died.  Blake told her to make that her emotional focus when she sang.

Blake may have be going for a Michael Jackson “She’s Out Of My Life” moment, but she’s physically and vocally affected by her feelings – even before she breaks down in tears.  It’s touching to see her vulnerability, heck, it brought tears to my eyes!

Here’s the thing.  If she can’t keep it together on stage emotionally she’s not ready for a full-on record deal.    There’s a way to be raw and open on stage and and still sing. (Hint, re-watch Stephanie Rice’s Blind Audition. )  At 15 Aliyah is as talented, and has as much of a professional background, as Brenneley.  This performance makes it seem otherwise.

Mark Isaiah –  “Sign of the Times” by Harry Styles                       .

At first, this looked promising! I had no idea that Mark played piano!

Unfortunately, what this performance did  was show me exactly what Mark’s weaknesses are.  He doesn’t have a great falsetto and he can’t really belt out a note.  Maybe with time and practice he’ll be able to do the latter.  He’s certainly got style that shows on stage.  Also, within a certain range he’s got a real sweetness in his vocals.  For the last couple of weeks I’ve been curious to see how much better he’d get.  With this number, I think he’s reached his limit.

The Voice Season 12 Top Ten Performances: Guesses on Who Goes Home

The iTunes charts give a times five bonus if an artist is in the top 10 at noon Eastern Standard time.  Hunter and Lauren were at numbers 9 and 10.  Brenneley, Jesse, Aliyah, Chris, and TSoul were in the top 30.  From there it drops down to 69 for Lilli, 89 for Vanessa and 97 for Mark,

However, itunes are not the perfect predictor of who ends up on the bottom. Going by that has ended up as wrong more than once. That’s because you can’t know how many people may have Apple music and are voting that way.  Then there’s the app and online voting.

For a gauge of straight popularity looking at the YouTube can give some insight.  For instance, despite being on the bottom the last two weeks, Mark’s videos are very popular.  Chris Blue’s are far and away the most popular.

This week, the videos with the highest and lowest views are  surprising. Factoring in the uploaded time difference with some of the videos At the the top are Aliyah, Chris, and Mark – in that  order. The bottom three are Jesse, TSoul, and Brenneley! Brenneley is never at the bottom, and this is the first time anyone has gotten close to Chris’s views, nevermind ahead of him!

Still, given the last two weeks it’s a safe bet that Mark is on the bottom.  Lilli may be as well, since she and Jesse are practically a tie and jazz is such a specialized thing. As for the third spot,  could fans of Lauren not have voted for Brenneley? After all, she doesn’t have the cushion of being on team Blake….  On the other hand, not everyone likes rap, so iTunes may have gotten it right and Vanessa could be at risk!

We’re all going to have to wait for tonight at 8pm ET to find out who’s really up for the instant save!  In the meantime though, which two singers do you think/hope will end up going home?
