The Originals has always been a show about family, and it was very much all about the Mikaelson family in Season 2 of the CW vampire drama, with Esther, Mikael, Kol, and Finn returning, Freya being introduced, and the siblings’ Aunt Dahlia serving as the big bad. And while family will always be a major theme in The Originals, it will be explored in a little bit of a different way in the show’s upcoming third season, as the sired vampires of the originals (in many ways, the “children” of Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah) arrive in New Orleans to seek power and vengeance, something that may force Elijah and Klaus to put aside their differences again and fight together.
One of the characters that was hurt most by Klaus’s actions at the end of Season 2 was Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin), who remains trapped by the werewolf curse when Season 3 starts. When we talked with Tonkin last month at San Diego Comic-Con, she gave us some scoop on what to expect in Season 3 when it premieres this fall, including more tension between Hayley and the Mikaelsons, possibly some new allies for Hayley, and how this season will be “sexier” and “grittier” than last year.
Watch our full interview with Tonkin below, and be sure to check out our videos with Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies, and The Originals executive producers Julie Plec and Michael Narducci, along with our other interviews with actors and writers from other major series, such as Heroes Reborn, Agents of SHIELD, and Legends of Tomorrow.
The Originals Season 3 premieres on the show’s new night, Thursday, Oct. 8, at 9 p.m. on The CW.
