If you read my review of last week’s The Mindy Project (and I hope you did!), you may remember that I discussed the concept of characters texting one another on the show. When Mindy (Mindy Kaling) sends a message to a friend or current love interest, the text box conversation appears on the screen as it would on the phone. This idea really does set itself apart from the other comedies out there. The latest episode featured this method and also my favorite The Office alum: Ellie Kemper.
The episode begins with Mindy looking so rough even Morgan (Ike Barinholz) would not sleep with her. As the two board an elevator, Cliff (Glenn Howerton) and an attractive woman join them. Mindy finds out her name is Yana and she is a butt model. Plus, she was a runner up in the Miss Universe pageant, which means she is the second most beautiful woman in the world. This upsets Mindy because she secretly likes Cliff and she is not even the second most beautiful woman on the floor of their building. Those are her words not mine!
Mindy realizes her purse is missing and has no way to get into her apartment. She decides to stay the night at Danny’s (Chris Messina) place. She also takes this time to confide inDanny about her secret crush on Cliff. Without revealing any names, Mindy admits that the guy works in the same building and that he is out of her league. The two descriptors make Danny believe he is the one Mindy is pining over.
Mindy’s purse is quickly found, but by Morgan and Max… I mean Peter (Adam Pally). The Happy Endings’ character is so similar to Peter; I sometimes forget what show I am watching. They look at her cell and notice that she has a text from Cliff. Peter announces that if a girl does not text a guy back very shortly after the text is sent, the guy will move on. This begins a PG-13 text conversation between Cliff and “Mindy.” After a bit of flirting and winky faces, “Mindy” says she is not wearing any underwear. Cliff responds that he will be right over. Panic ensues as Morgan and Peter try to figure out how to cover up their meddling.
They decide to throw a party at Mindy’s apartment to get Cliff to believe she is actually there but just entertaining other guests. Morgan and Peter spend the majority of their time keeping Cliff preoccupied while still texting him from Mindy’s phone. “Mindy” texts Cliff to say she is in the bathroom because she wants to make sure she is clean for him. This seems to work for a few hours, but Cliff gets fed up and goes to the bathroom door to confess his true interest in Mindy. He likes her and wants to get to know her better. He opens the door and finds an empty bathroom. Morgan and Peter break the news. Cliff asks that the texts be deleted and leaves. Before he exits, he bumps into Heather (Kemper). They go back to her place to hook up.
While the party is happening, Mindy and Danny must deal with his crazy neighbor. Danny admits to having slept with her, but wants nothing more to do with her. Mindy pretends to be his fiancé and be pregnant with his child. The neighbor shows up in Danny’s apartment unannounced. She is furious Danny is “cheating” on her. She quickly gets over it after seeing how Danny looks into Mindy’s eyes and the fact that Mindy is “clearly pregnant.”
Back at the office, Danny declares that Mindy’s crush is not out of her league. She concurs and says she is going to call Cliff. Danny is surprised that she was referring about Cliff and not him and Mindy is too excited to notice. So, does this mean there is a future for Mindy and Danny, or will the two stay apart for a few more seasons and get together in the end? Lucky for viewers, a third season now seems promising.
The episode concludes with Mindy recovering her purse and all of its contents, which includes her phone. She received a voicemail from Heather indicating her and Cliff had an amazing time at her party, as well as all the texts from Cliff. Hopefully next week’s episode will address the Mindy/Cliff/Heather triangle. Congrats to Mindy Kaling on another great episode.
