The Flash on The CW may not have been the first show in the so-called Arrowverse after Arrow, in which the overall series are housed, but it undoubtedly expanded the world that The CW series of shows based on DC Comics had intended to do themselves. From the overly expansive storylines that cross time and space, alternate dimensions, and more, The Flash continued to build upon each episode while introducing various characters into the mix that could appear in the other shows. Below, we’ve detailed The Flash cast and characters from The CW show, as well as other aspects of the show and the Arrowverse as the entire series, and likely the Arrowverse itself will no longer expand.
The Flash
The Flash started on The CW in 2014 after the character was initially introduced in Arrow and was supposed to have his origin story locked into Arrow. Still, the feature of The Flash was received so positively that it received its series with Grant Gustin as the Scarlet Speedster of this rendition, which was being created at the same time as the highly anticipated The Flash movie of the same name with Ezra Miller. Unfortunately, while the Grant Gustin variation of The Flash on The CW has indeed met his DCEU counterpart in Ezra Miller, it’s unlikely that the two will meet again in The CW’s The Flash before the show ends its final season with Season 9, or even in the upcoming The Flash movie slated for a 2023 Summer release.
Grant Gustin as The Flash
The leader of not only the show The Flash on The CW but also the team leader within the show itself, and a forensic scientist for his local police department, Barry Allen, portrayed by Grant Gustin, has been a memorable portrayal of the Scarlet Speedster for sure. Nearly every member of The Flash’s rogues gallery has made more than one appearance throughout the show, with some such as Leonard Snart, Captin Cold, and Heatwave as members of the Legends of Tomorrow, another show on The CW. Grant Gustin has been the leading cast member of The Flash since its premiere and through each Crisis and crossover, and has even portrayed The Flash in different characters from DC Comics.
Candice Patton as Iris West-Allen
Although not necessarily a metahuman, Iris, Barry’s wife, has been there every step of the way and has faced losses of her own. Still, the overall number of enemies she has outsmarted, escaped, and defeated has been worth her being considered a hero of her own. Iris West’s father also has a massive role in The Flash’s life as he has been his father since Barry’s mother died when he was young, and his father was imprisoned for her murder. Interestingly, Barry’s father has been portrayed by the same actor that portrayed Barry Allen in The Flash series from 1990 and Jay Gerrick in the overall Arrowverse.
Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost
The role of Caitlin Snow, portrayed by Danielle Panabaker, has been one of the most long-lasting characters on The Flash and one of the characters that have gone through the most personal struggle. The Flash started with Caitlin as a dedicated scientist and doctor. Still, she eventually came to terms with her frozen alter-ego, Killer Frost, and became a hero like The Flash after a short stint as a villain and a name change to Frost after she separated herself from Caitlin. As one of the few cast members that have portrayed different characters in The Flash, it’s been much more enjoyable with the characters separated and Caitlin acting in scenes with herself.
Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramone/Vibe
Carlos Valdes as Cisco and Vibe was another interesting character. The character was originally a scientist at S.T.A.R. Labs and a friend of Barry Allen, but much like Killer Frost, he was later given abilities that he used to further help team Flash without a stint as a villain.
Tom Cavanagh as Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash and Harrison Wells
Tom Cavanagh has had one of the most exciting stints on The Flash out of most of the cast and characters, solely for the multiple roles he has portrayed across the Arrowverse, but mainly The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. While Matt Letscher mainly portrayed Reverse-Flash on Legends of Tomorrow, the two characters shared experiences. They also often obtained knowledge of the other’s encounters which furthered the work of both actors tackling the role of Reverse-Flash.
Other Cast and Characters from The Flash
Outside of the characters listed above, John Wesley Shipp’s variations of The Flash are an homage to his previous role as the hero. Barry Allen’s family, such as his children from the future, make appearances as well. Barry Allen’s daughter Nora Allen, also known as XS, is portrayed by Jessica Parker Kennedy. In contrast, Kid Flash is portrayed by Keiynan Lonsdale in the Arrowverse as he’s been in a portion of Legends of Tomorrow and their son Bart. Additionally, many enemies of The Flash, specifically his rouges gallery, have run through important arcs of The Flash with excellent cast members such as Wentworth Miller as Leonard Snart/Captain Cold.
