Does anyone else believe that Tobey Maguire is in his 40s? The guy looks like he ages half as fast as anyone else and can still play younger roles to this day. Obviously he can’t get away with playing a teenager any longer but he could easily pass for someone in his late 20s to early 30s. He’s gained so much notoriety in his life that you would probably be hard-pressed to remember that he was in fact a child actor and has been around for quite some time. It’s fun to note that he had a desire to become a chef at one point but his mother actually gave him $100 to reconsider and think about becoming an actor instead. That seems like the kind of bribery that you would reserve for getting a kid to behave, but it seems to have worked since he became something of a success.
Here are some of his best films so far.
5. The Ice Storm
Things are not okay in the Hood household. First off Ben is having an affair with one of their neighbors and gets found out at one point, then their daughter Wendy is continually trying to seduce said neighbors sons. Paul, who is the only one in the family that doesn’t seem to have massive issues, perhaps because he’s at boarding school, is well-removed from all of this during the movie as his father feels shame at what he’s done, while his mother Elena has a quick romp with the husband of the woman that Ben has been sleeping with, instantly regretting it. By the time the movie ends they’ve managed to come together again.
4. Wonder Boys
If anyone ever tells you that being a writer means you’re going to be seen as a rather disturbed and conflicted individual go ahead and believe them. The truth of the matter is that a lot of writers that are fully into what they’re doing are not always the most stable people and somehow live in a world that is half-in and half-out of this reality, creating a very troubling individual that is not always on the level but is always dedicated to the story they’re writing. If you can understand that then you might have a chance of understanding a story like this since writers are, for lack of a better word, kind of odd.
3. Pleasantville
It’s interesting when you actually see the world around you in terms of black and white, but also in hues of black and white. When David and Jennifer are somehow sucked into the TV world of Pleasantville they have to act accordingly as the town is one of those pristine places from the 50s where nothing of today’s modern era was ever really known to exist, at least in the sitcoms. Once Jennifer has sex with one of the young men however the town begins to change as color begins to invade every aspect of the town slowly, bit by bit, until those that can now be seen in color are eventually singled out. At one point however the color becomes the norm, and David returns home while Jennifer stays.
2. Spider-Man
Iron Man may have kicked off the MCU but Spider-Man definitely helped to get the ball rolling along with a few other superheroes since the movie came out in 2002. While it wasn’t the MCU’s property it was still done in a way that was pleasing to a lot of people since it was the sign of change that a lot of fans wanted to see and a venue that superheroes really needed in order to be noticed. One of the biggest downfalls of this movie was the Green Goblin’s costume as it seemed like something out of a Power Rangers episode. But aside from that the novelty of it all was simply too great to be ignored.
1. Brothers
A lot of people will no doubt focus on the kiss that went on between Tommy and Grace in this movie and figure that they might have taken things further if Sam hadn’t made his way home. What Sam went through was horrible, and the PTSD he suffered was hardly a surprise. But the truth was that Tommy and Grace never took their emotions any further and Sam, for all that he wanted to come home, simply couldn’t make his way out of the desert. Too many veterans have come home in such a manner, and getting them help isn’t quite as easy as just admitting them to the nearest hospital. It takes time, and patience, and a great deal of understanding.
Tobey Maguire is a great actor in all honesty as well as an award winner that has earned his place among the elite. It’s debatable where he falls on the scale of who’s the best Spider-Man, but he did a pretty good job.
