The Five Best Super Bowl Commercials of the 2000 to 2010s

It’s been known for a while that even those that don’t get into watching the NFL during the Superbowl, or any other time for that matter, will still tune in to watch the commercials. Companies fork over millions of dollars for a 30-second spot and even more for commercials that last a little longer. But they do this in the hope that people won’t just remember the ads, they’ll be enticed to go out and start purchasing the product. This is the whole idea behind advertisements after all, to get the product out there in a fun and engaging way so that people will begin to realize it’s there and discover that they simply can’t do without this product or that service. What’s even more truthful is that it works. For the millions of dollars that companies spend on these commercials they usually get their money back and even more based on how much the consumers liked the commercial and now want to purchase what they’re selling.

Here are some of the best Superbowl commercials from the 2000s to 2010s.

5. M&M-2012

Most people don’t need a lot of reason to eat chocolate. It’s good, it’s sweet, and in some cases it’s even filling. A lot of us might have come to the realization that M&M’s have been little more than a clever gimmick for a few decades now and not much substance behind the commercials, but the entertainment that’s been presented has still been appreciated. It does kind of make some people wonder about the idea of eating something that’s represented by a living, thinking cartoon character, but for the most part the candies have been widely popular for so long that  the commercials are kind of a bonus to those that enjoy them.

4. Pepsi-2004

Pepsi is one of the kings of the Superbowl without reservation since its logo is one of the biggest and the commercials are anywhere from cheesy to moderately funny. Sometimes though they do hit the funny bone hard enough and in the right spot to really give the people a treat. One thing a lot of people tend to do on Superbowl day is stock up on goodies and make their way over to a friend’s house where they’ll spend the rest of the day snacking, watching the game, and of course cracking open a Pepsi or two. These kind of commercials are much the same as any food or beverage commercial in that they don’t always try to make you need a Pepsi, but they do try to entertain you.

3. Go Daddy-2013

Some people actually couldn’t stomach this commercial and there was some mild controversy that went on after it aired. GoDaddy is the kind of service that they’re trying to sell as popular and practical, hence the supermodel and the tech nerd swapping spit as they show how compatible they are. If you weren’t one of those that cringed when you saw this then good on you, but if you were like the rest of us you might have thought that the director of this commercial had lost their damned mind. That’s the one thing people need to realize about these ads though, not all of them are going to make that much sense AND be completely tasteful. They’re created for shock value as much as entertainment.

2. Doritos/Mt. Dew-2018

Last year this was actually one of the most anticipated commercials not really for the product but for the chance to see Peter Dinklage and Morgan Freeman square off on camera. There was a lot of hype going into and you can bet that Doritos and Mt. Dew ponied up an amazing amount of money to get it done in this manner. Add onto that the fact that they had to bring in Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott and you’re talking more than just a fair chunk of change for the entire production. But the ad went off so flawlessly that people loved it and there was really no criticism that didn’t seem like it was being entirely petty since this ad was just awesome.

1. Bud Light-2002

This was one of those ads that got talked about over and over after it aired for several reasons. For one, Budweiser and its various products are yet another royal member of the Superbowl club that are constantly shelling out humongous amounts of money to get their spots front and center during the breaks in the big game. Also, this kind of alluded to how men and women tend to think so differently when it comes to various moments in their relationships. The woman is attempting to be sexy, seductive, and alluring, while the man is trying to watch the game and doesn’t really care. But when she mentions she has Bud Light he goes racing upstairs and slips on the satin sheets straight out the window. Come on, guys aren’t quite that simple, and very few of us would go running for a Bud Light. But it does make for an entertaining commercial.

It’s going to be fun to see what kind of commercials roll out this year.
