The Five Best Female Action Movie Heroes of 2019

Captain Marvel

There have been some badass women on screen in 2019 and a lot of them have gained a great deal of respect from moviegoers since whether it’s the manner in which they’ve been presented or just the simple fact that they’ve been revealed is something great since it’s no longer a strictly male-dominated landscape any longer. Getting rid of the male heroes isn’t a worthwhile goal, but stepping up the roles of the women, especially those that have been seen as insanely powerful in comics, is a good move since it creates a lot more equality and a more balanced story in many cases since despite the whole ‘future is female’ angle being so heavily, and rightly, disputed, the act of creating some form of unity and being able to admit that women can be insanely strong and on the same level with men is a big step forward no matter how the argument is swayed.

Here are some of the best female action heroes from 2019.

5. Jean Grey

Consider this, Jean Grey as the Phoenix is one of the most powerful forces in the entire Marvel universe. This is a mutant that can take on gods and cause them to worry, and is usually only able to be shut down by beings that are so insanely powerful that we haven’t really seen their like yet in the movies. In fact the only reason she makes it this far down the list is that Fox didn’t seem to know what to do with her other than show a fraction of the power that she’s capable of wielding and a fancy light show. If Disney is bringing in the X-Men they’d be smart to unleash the potential that’s there, since the Phoenix, especially the Dark Phoenix, could crack the earth like an egg and there’s not a lot of heroes on the roster that could stop her at this point. Evangelia Galanis of CBR has more to say on this matter.

4. Captain Marvel

Fans are still going to argue about Carol Danvers being the new face of the MCU and there are going to be a lot of reasons tossed about, but she did make a good action movie. Of course one of the main issues is that Brie Larson had to go and slam white men, she did, like it or not, for their views and went on a short tirade about how she wanted more representation of women and people of color at the movie. That alone might keep this from being one of the more popular movies in the MCU stable, but if that gets toned down then it’s possible that the second movie might actually go somewhere and not be seen as a feminist attempt at subverting Marvel for an obvious agenda, as Jess Oho of Mashable might agree.

3. Alita

Say what you want about this movie, and plenty of people have, but it was simply awesome and insanely entertaining. The CGI wasn’t always the best but Alita’s story, what little we got to see of it, was pretty cool. The whole love angle was a bit sappy and a little too much, but her beef with the higher-ups that control the city and basically everyone in it should hopefully come to a very dramatic conclusion if there’s ever a sequel. To put it plainly this was a fun and very playful movie with a very dark look and lean to it since Alita was attempting to disrupt the status quo and was designed to take on the establishment, which in turn is the enemy in this story.

2. Scarlet Witch/Wanda

This very nearly took the top spot since despite her lack of presence in Endgame, the sheer emotion that Wanda was given for this fight was nothing less than awe-inspiring since she has every reason to hate Thanos more than many of those on the battlefield since she had to watch him destroy Vision after using the Time Stone, which means she had to lose her companion twice in less than a few minutes’ time, ironic I know. But the manner in which she begins to dominate Thanos was so intensely satisfying that many viewers should be able to admit that they were hoping things would turn out differently, even though they knew that this wouldn’t be his end.

1. Sarah Connor

Does anyone get the feeling that this was designed to be an on screen pissing match between Mackenzie Davis’ character and Linda Hamilton’s? That’s what it seems like for the most part, but it also seems as though Mackenzie Davis, despite being advanced and despite her own pain, couldn’t hold a candle to Hamilton since the character of Sarah Connor had to endure quite a bit to get where she was, not to mention the death of her son right in front of her. The movie might have tanked, but there was no way that Sarah Connor could have been left off of this list since obviously she’s been one of the most badass ladies of the year.

Women in the movies are getting a lot tougher, and it’s great in many ways.
