At the end of Supergirl episode 2×21 ‘Resist,’ Supergirl takes one mammoth punch. And we’re all stunned, wondering who on a Daxamite ship could possibly hit her that hard. If you haven’t seen the end of Supergirl Episode 2×21, you can read our episode review, elsewhere on this site. Or watch the episode. Spoiler Alert
Alright. You’re back. You’ve been warned.
Then Superman walks out of the shadows and we realize he’s the one who slugged Supergirl and our stunned feeling become shock. How could Superman, the ultimate superhero, possibly deck his own cousin and the hero of our show?!?!?! Is this payback from DCFilms? Did Zack Snyder and Geoff Johns make Greg Berlanti & Co. show Superman punching Supergirl out as payback?? [Intrepid fans will recall Tyler Hoelchlin’s portrayal of Kal-El winning the Internet and the hearts of fans last fall when he appeared in the first two episodes of Supergirl Season 2.] Zack Snyder and Geoff Johns couldn’t have been happy about that. Maybe they forced Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg to show this scene.
Or maybe not. The promo for Supergirl Season 2 Finale, ‘Nevertheless, She Persisted’, shows Kal and Kara fighting in a fountain or pool. Maybe this was a story choice, since the one punch at the end of ‘Resist’ is followed up with a whole fight scene in the finale.
But still it’s certainly playing against type to have Superman do something apparently evil, isn’t it? Except it’s not. Back in the days of picture tubes, 4×3 aspect ratios and low definition TV, on Superman: The Animated Series, producer Bruce W. Timm briefly made Superman a villain in the series finale. Mr. Timm showed interstellar ubervillain Darkseid brainwash Superman into leading an invasion of Earth. And in Smallville, Clark became a super thief when exposed to red kryptonite. In Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Superman spent half an episode as a Super-Jerk, also under the influence of red kryptonite.
Fear not, Mr. Kresiberg already told us that Kal’s presence in the Supergirl finale will be supportive influence to help Kara make tough decisions. So, we can infer that Supergirl will give Superman a cognitive recalibration worthy of Black Widow on Hawkeye in Avengers, allowing the Man of Steel to get his mind right. Regardless, it looks like a worthy season finale and an exciting hour of television.
Supergirl airs next Monday at 8 PM Eastern on your local CW network broadcast affiliate. Or stream it later through the CWTV.com web portal.
