On Monday, 15 May 2017, NBCUniversal showed a trailer for Krypton in its presentation at the Upfronts. Krypton is a Superman prequel. Cable channel Syfy ordered the show to series last week. NBCUniversal owns Syfy. NBCUniversal has not yet made today’s Krypton trailer available to the public but we have it from an Instagram post. The trailer includes some violent scenes as well as some racy scenes. These scenes suggest that even though the show is about Superman’s grandfather, it won’t be your grandfather’s Superman show.
Krypton follows Superman’s grandfather in his effort to restore the honor of the House of El. Today’s trailer showed it will also include some other conflict, possibly between the ruling Council and the lower castes. The Cast of Krypton includes Cameron Cuffe as Superman’s grandfather and Georgina Campbell as an ancestor of General Zod. David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Man of Steel) will serve as an executive producer. Damian Kindler (Stargate SG-1 and Sleepy Hollow) will serve as the showrunner.
There is reason for optimism, fans. Krypton received a green light as part of an overall rebranding effort at Syfy. The cable channel wants to focus more on blue-sky science fiction and original programming. We have already seen high quality tv adaptations of Arthur C. Clark’s Childhood’s End and The Expance on Syfy. Under the rebranding effort, Syfy is also developing Nightflyers from George R. R. Martin, Brave New World from Amblin Television, and Hyperion. Considering Goyer’s and Kindler’s prior successes and Syfy’s overall rebranding commitment, this writer believes Krypton can fly high as well.
