Here’s What ‘Suicide Squad’ Needs to Succeed

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn

Use Humor, But Embrace the Darkness

Look, Batman v Superman was grim. From beginning to end, it was a dark story with very little light. While I may have enjoyed it immensely, that isn’t the type of story that Suicide Squad should tell. I’m not saying that the film needs to be a comedy (far from it, actually), but there is so much humor within these characters that we’re going to be seeing that it would be a shame for none of that to shine through.

Use humor to your advantage, Suicide Squad, but, at the same time, don’t forget where you’re coming from. Even ignoring the fact that the DC Expanded Universe is pretty grim, this is a film starring supervillains — the baddest of the bad. There should be violence. There should be some bleakness. Anything otherwise would be a disservice to the characters. Use the world you’re in, but let the characters be who they truly are inside.
