Just when you think the Spice Girls might never get back together for anything they come out and announce that they’re going to be starting a project that’s going to be an animated superhero movie, with their voices being used as the main characters. There’s no real discussion as to what the film is about or when it will be released but what’s known is that the girls are getting back together for this much at least and might be thinking about another tour eventually. In this era of female empowerment that could be something extraordinarily great or, since it’s the Spice Girls, kind of awkward since they haven’t been seen in a while.
Back in the 90’s the Spice Girls were one of the hottest girl bands ever and had the kind of energy that people didn’t think would fizzle out so fast. But after a few big hits and a whole slew of merchandise started flying off the shelves they fell prey to the same thing that a lot of pop bands have before and since. They started winding down, they got older, and so did their fan base. It’s hard to stay relevant when your fans start to get older and see you as less of a hit and more of a has been that can no longer hold their attention. That’s the unfortunate side of the music industry is that the fans tend to move along with the trends without cease, going where the current will take them in terms of following the next big thing to hit the industry. The Spice Girls were the next big thing for a while and then the thing became the institution and lost its momentum without any thought to what might happen as a result.
They had the popularity to keep going, but one big mistake they made was buying into their own hype and making the movie Spice World. Not only did do poorly at the box office but it kind of took the last swipe at the dam that had been holding their fame upwards and let it all go running out as their popularity and their fans swiftly evacuated, flooding into other areas until only a small, loyal fan base remained. Even those individuals have been pared down over the years since the Spice Girls really haven’t done a whole lot and even went their separate ways for a while. The talk of getting back together for a tour is at this point just talk and nothing else, but a few of the girls seem to be willing to consider it. Until then however this movie is going to be their top priority as a group and the effort they put into could be the deciding factor on whether or not they decide to actually stick together and try to make a go of it again.
In the world of comebacks, reboots, and remakes, this could be one that some fans might feel is better off being left to this one production.
