Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has been confirmed.

When the live-action adaptation of the classic Sega video game burst onto the scene by dropping a trailer in May 2019, die-hard fans were not happy with the product. That’s because the blue hedgehog didn’t look like his original design, with the creators making him seem more human-like, which actually came across as a bit creepy. However, Jeff Fowler – the director – addressed the criticism and instantly changed Sonic’s look to the original design, which pleased fans. Ultimately, the feature came out the following year before the pandemic, and Sonic The Hedgehog got a good reception from critics and fans. Still, more importantly, it made a killing at the box office. The first installment garnered $320 million worldwide. The first film’s success began a new franchise that Hollywood has been dying for when it comes to video game adaptations.

Two years later, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 raced into theaters with the addition of Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and the sequel once again got a good reception for critics and fans, collecting $401 million worldwide. Part II saw Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik return in his full video game form and go on the search for an emerald that could destroy the world. Sonic teams up with his friend and sidekick Tails, though Dr. Robotnik has a partner in crime, Sonic’s archrival, Knuckles. Given the recent comments from Jim Carrey on Access Hollywood that was essentially retirement, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, seemed like it could be the final film of the franchise:

“Well, I’m retiring,” Carrey stated during his interview, adding: “Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious.” Carrey says he’ll consider another role if the right script lands in his hands. However, he was fairly content with the quiet life, “If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in old ink that says to me that it’s going to be important for people to see, I might continue down, but I’m taking a break. I like my quiet life, I like putting paint on canvas, and I love my spiritual life, and I feel like – and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

However, Hollywood is a business first and foremost, so a third film was still greenlit even though Carrey announced his retirement. The plan is to release the film on December 20, 2024. As far as Jim Carrey is concerned, there are rumors that the script has a big role for Dr. Robotnik in the third installment, though Carrey himself isn’t confirmed for the upcoming film. During the premiere for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Neal Mortiz and Toby Ascher – the film’s producers – were asked about Carrey’s shocking announcement and said they “wouldn’t even try” to replace him with another name. Anything is possible as the film isn’t set for until late 2024, and the current process is likely due to the team trying to recruit Carrey for Sonic 3.

The news of Dr. Robotnik’s involvement in the third feature comes from Sonic Paradise, where the magazine claims the upcoming film is in “active development.” Other details about the possible plot of the next Sonic movie are that Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles will be forced to fight another evil version of the title character, Shadow the Hedgehog, who was teased in the post-credits scene in Sonic 2. Other notable characters like Amy and Big the Cat will make their way into the film thanks to a dimensional portal. These plot details have yet to be confirmed, so take it with a grain of salt, especially since scripts tend to change throughout the production phase.

In the meantime, the world of Sonic has gotten bigger in the last film. Just like a third film was confirmed, Paramount confirmed that Knuckles would get a spinoff series, with Idris Elba set to voice the popular character again. At the moment, there’s no timetable for Sonic’s foe turned friend, though, given that Knuckles is likely appearing in the next Sonic adventure, it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if the series is released around the time the next film comes out. Other than those alleged details, there isn’t much to go on about Sonic 3, but it should be a fun outing. The Sonic films have been a good surprise as Hollywood doesn’t particularly have a good track record with video game adaptations. While Tinseltown keeps getting the Resident Evil franchise wrong remains baffling, things like Sonic or The Witcher prove that video game adaptation can be significant in live-action form.Sonic The Hedgehog 2
