Sleepy Hollow Season 3 Episode 1 Review: “I, Witness”

Sleepy Hollow

When we last saw the demon-fighting team that is Ichabod Crane, Abbie and Jenny Mills, and Captain Irving on Sleepy Hollow, they had just defeated Moloch and stopped the Apocalypse from happening while Katrina and Henry died at the hands of Ichabod and Abbie, respectively.

Now, in its third season, things have changed quite a bit in Sleepy Hollow. Captain Irving has left Sleepy Hollow for good in order to protect his family (due to the departure of Orlando Jones, who will be missed), Abbie went on to become an agent in the FBI, Jenny went through some odd jobs (never thought I would hear her mention working as a paralegal), and our resident time traveler Ichabod has apparently landed himself behind bars for attempting to smuggle in an ancient tablet, which he found while journeying to Scotland (Crane on a plane. That I would have loved to see). I was a bit confused to see Ichabod’s name on the mausoleum plaque, given that the man is still living and breathing thanks to Katrina’s spell way back in the first season, but I’m sure that there will be an answer of sorts as the new season progresses.

I enjoyed the scene where Abbie took Ichabod back to the Archives and told him that the entire building is going to be demolished to make way for a mini-mall, which sent him into a shock/anger-filled rant about modern-day Americans having no regard for the past. I would have to agree with Ichabod on that one, because today, everything is about progress and moving forward. No one really looks back on the past anymore unless they’re sitting in a classroom or visiting a museum. The prison scene made me face-palm. Ichabod was going on and on about how prison changed him, but when Abbie asked if he wanted to stay with his new “friends,” Ichabod immediately said “no” and got out as fast as he could.

The scene where the two Witnesses were in the Colonial Times-themed restaurant to retrieve a secret message that Ichabod’s old flame Betsy Ross (Nikki Reed) left for General Washington was humorous to watch as Ichabod once again expressed his dismay at the way that modern Americans treat the nation’s history with the various merchandise and menu items at the restaurant. He even became a fashion advisor for a brief moment when he turned the host’s hat around , saying that one of the corners goes in front as the man is not a pirate. Good ol’ Ichabod. I really love these little “back in the day” moments that Ichabod has. Brings a smile to my face every time.

The monster of the week, however, kind of failed to impress as it was attracted to gunpowder and preyed on the fear of its victims. Its only vulnerability is when its eyes turn white before it strikes. (However, it was kind of amusing to listen to Ichabod Crane say the Mandarin pronunciation for the word demon.) The new evil character for the season, on the other hand, kind of shocked me, to say the least. I mean, when I saw the ancient-looking box during the beginning of the episode, I immediately thought of Pandora’s Box from Greek mythology, but I never believed that it would be Pandora herself (Shannyn Sossamon) as the predecessor of Moloch. Though, after seeing her capture the Headless Horseman, I’d say that she is going to be a force to be reckoned with. I’m also glad that Abbie, through her speech to the Asian drug kingpin, realized in the end that she is first and foremost a Witness and that she has a mission to fight any evil that comes to Sleepy Hollow.

It’s still too soon to say that Sleepy Hollow will return to its former glory, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction. Let’s hope that it will stay on track this time.
