Sarah Edmondson is a Canadian actress. With that said, there are a lot of people who will have heard her name in recent times because she was one of the women who came forward about NXIVM, a multi-level marketing company that turned out to be a recruiting platform for a cult. Here are 10 things that you may or may not have known about Sarah Edmondson:
1. Born in Vancouver, BC
Edmondson was born in Vancouver, BC. Generally speaking, Vancouver is considered to be one of the most livable cities in Canda and beyond, which is based on its scenic surroundings, its excellent infrastructure, and its numerous opportunities. On top of this, it is one of the hubs for filming movies and TV shows in Canada.
2. Went to Concordia University
Education-wise, Edmondson went to Concordia University, which can be found in Montreal, QC. Said institution uses English rather than French for its primary language of instruction. Something that is notable because French is the sole official language of the province of Quebec. Regardless, it seems safe to say that this choice of language has played a part in making Concordia University the biggest school in Canada when one measures on the basis of enrollment. Subject-wise, Edmondson studied theatre performance, which is perhaps unsurprising when she was already studying theatre even when she was still in secondary school.
3. Spent Some Time in a Kibbutz
In between secondary and post-secondary education, Edmondson spent some time living in a kibbutz. For those who are unfamiliar, kibbutzim are collective communities that can be found in the state of Israel. The first kibbutzim were utopian communities that focused on agriculture, which is perhaps unsurprising when agriculture was the dominant economic activity of the region in those times. However, it is interesting to note that there are now kibbutzim that focus on other economic activities such as tech and industrial manufacturing.
4. Had an Interest in Period Pieces
When asked about the kind of roles that she was interested in, Edmondson once replied that she wanted to do something in a period piece. The exact period of time didn’t seem to matter to her as much as the chance to act in any period piece. Apparently, one of Edmondson’s main reasons for her choice was the chance to dress up in costumes, which is something that she enjoys about her choice of career.
5. Found Sustaining Intense Emotions to Be Challenging
From the same interview, when Edmondson was asked about what she found to be challenging about acting, she answered “sustaining intense emotionality.” In particular, she mentioned that she found calling upon the emotion of anger to be particularly difficult for her because it wasn’t her go-to response under normal circumstances.
6. One of Her Most Challenging Roles Was on YTV
In the past, Edmondson has stated that one of her most challenging roles was on a show called Are You Afraid of the Dark on a Canadian TV channel called YTV, which was and continues to be aimed at a younger audience. Primarily, this was because she had to play a would-be model whose face was stolen by a wicked witch. As a result, it wasn’t one role but two roles rolled into one. Furthermore, the whole process was made even more challenging because she had to switch from playing one character to the other on a regular basis, which meant changing everything from her voice to her physical stance with the same frequency. Suffice to say that the filming process was quite grueling, particularly since the whole thing happened over the course of just five days.
7. Has Done a Fair Amount of Voice Work
Over the course of her career, Edmondson has done a fair amount of voice work. For example, she has been involved with the Barbie, Bratz, Polly Pocket, and My Little Pony franchises in various ways. Likewise, she has played a number of characters on a number of animated shows such as Max Steel, Geronimo Stilton, and Transformers: Cybertron.
8. Has Been Showing Up in Hallmark Movies
In recent times, Edmondson has been showing up in Hallmark movies and TV shows as well. Generally speaking, these productions aren’t particularly high-profile. However, it is clear that they are meeting some kind of interest on the part of consumers, seeing as how they have been met with wild success. There is no way to come up with a perfect explanation for this phenomenon, but it isn’t uncommon to see interested individuals speculate about audiences wanting the TV equivalent of comfort food to balance out more “serious” content when it comes to their TV intake.
9. Lured Into NXIVM Using the Promise of a Secret Sisterhood that Would Empower Women
Edmondson has mentioned that she is the kind of person who wants to be all that she can be. As a result, it makes sense that she would be interested in self-empowerment meetings, workshops, and the like. Unfortunately, Edmondson was lured into NXIVM by the promise of a secret sisterhood that empowered its members. In exchange for admission, she and the other newcomers were required to give up compromising material that would serve to keep them silent. Furthermore, what Edmondson had been told would be a small tattoo during the initiation turned out to be a brand instead.
10. It Took Her Some Time to Escape NXIVM
In total, Edmondson spent more than a decade as a member of NXIVM. She was lucky in that she was able to come to the realization that she and the other cult members were dupes, which prompted her to get out of the cult. Something that tends to be very difficult, not least because it involves putting a lot of their social ties at serious risk. In fact, even now, Edmondson has stated that there are still members of NXIVM who think that she is nothing but a has-been attention-seeker while the cult leader is a martyr who has been framed by the authorities.
