Samantha Bee has been a target of the media in the last 24 hours because of a segment she ran in which she made fun of a man for having “Nazi Hair.” At the time of the comment Bee had no idea that this man was in fact a cancer patient. Since that time, Bee has been skewered for her comments and the show has issued an apology that wasn’t deemed enough. Here’s the full story:
Kyle Coddington, one of the men mocked for having “Nazi hair” in a segment about Conservative Political Action Conference attendees aired by Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, isn’t satisfied with the show’s apology – or half-apology, as he called it.
On Thursday, the TBS news satire issued a statement saying that they’d only learned that day that his haircut was due to chemotherapy and radiation treatment for stage 4 brain cancer. Consequently, they apologized and removed him from the segment. (You can watch the offending portion on Outsetmagazine.com, the media organization for which Coddington is a contributor.)
Coddington claimed that the show really only gave him a “half apology.” Still, Coddington did thank the show for donating $1,000 to his GoFundMe page to help defray his medical expenses both on TV and in his statement. “It’s been an interesting 24 hours, for sure,” he said.
I can completely understand getting offended and Samantha Bee 100% made a mistake. But how is this “half-apologizing?” Her statement came very soon after the show realized its mistake not to mention $1,000 donation to his page? I’d say that’s more than an apology. Honestly Samantha Bee is the last person who would intentionally offend anyone. In fact her intention is to offend EVERYONE so that no one is left behind her comedic criticism. I think Kyle might have to let this one go a little. My guess is that the show and Bee are extremely sympathetic to Kyle’s condition. Had they known that in the first place, it never would have been included.
