As many of you know, Rihanna received a prestigious award recently. For her selfless acts for her native country of Barbados, the singer received Harvard’s Humanitarian Award. The actual ceremony took place yesterday and Rihanna herself was there to not only receive the award but also to give a great speech.
You know, I’ve talked about this before. What you do with your money and fame is entirely up to you. I’m not here to judge. But when it gets to a point where you’re in the $50 million plus net worth range you might want to think about doing some good for the world. And frankly it doesn’t take money at all to do good for the world but when you’re in that kind of financial position money certainly goes a long way.
While I applaud Rihanna for her efforts, I also feel kind of sad because there are numerous people in her financial position who actually do nothing with their money but spend it on themselves. Helping out humanity isn’t even a remote thought in their heads. Something to think about I guess.
Here are some highlights from her speech:
“So I made it to Harvard,” the singer said with a grin before flipping her hair. “Never thought I’d be able to say that in my life.”
“I would say to myself, ‘When I grow up, and I can get rich, I’m gonna save kids all over the world,’” Rihanna said. “I just didn’t know I would be in the position to do that by the time I was a teenager.”
“People make it seem way too hard, man,” Rihanna said. “The truth is, and what that little girl watching those commercials didn’t know, is that you don’t have to be rich to be a humanitarian. You don’t have to be rich to help somebody. You don’t gotta be famous. You don’t even have to be college-educated … I mean I wish I was … especially today … I might come back.”
Interrupted by cheers, she continued, “But it starts with your neighbor, the person right next to you. You just do whatever you can to help in any way that you can.”
