According to James Whitbrook of Gizmodo there’s not much that can be said about Paul Rudd’s character in the upcoming Ghostbusters 3, or as it’s been labeled, Ghostbusters 2020. What can be said is that his character will be a teacher and will be somehow connected to the main cast members, so it seems fair to say that we’ll see more of him than just a quick cameo before he’s out of the picture. It’s not even certain if he’ll be part of the team or if he’ll be one of the characters affected by the story line, but whatever the case is it’s enough to get a lot of people excited since Paul Rudd is at this time one of the most popular guys in Hollywood and for a good reason. Adding him to a cast that already includes a few legendary actors is only going to make the movie better if you ask a lot of people that have been pining for the third installment of the Ghosbusters franchise for years.
As of right now writers such as Sandy Schaefer from ScreenRant and many others are coming to believe that this movie will be a passing of the torch to the next generation of Ghostbusters since the fact that Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and even Sigourney Weaver will be returning. There’s still no hard confirmation as to whether Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts will be back, but you’ve got to think that it would take a miracle to get Rick Moranis back in action since he decided to retire and place his focus squarely on his family, which is admirable. But adding Rudd to the mix is definitely a good call since he can take over with comedy or drama as needed and he’s already proven himself to be a great addition to any highly anticipated movie that happens to need a guy that’s versatile enough to fill one role or another. How he’s going to work his way into the main story isn’t known yet but one thing that seems to be certain is that he’s not being brought in just for the hell of it since the director has already stated that he’s been wanting to work with Rudd for a while.
It kind of has to be said, the prospects for this movie are already starting to look a lot more promising than what was doled out in 2016. There’s been a fair amount of outrage as to why Ghostbusters 3 would even be attempted since it seems to be trying to negate the 2016 version, but in all honesty that’s a bit hypocritical since the most recent version pretty much stepped over the wishes of the fans and seemed to try and improve on something that fans had already come to love. It’s true that Ghostbusters 2 didn’t have nearly the same presence as the first movie, but in the same breath it had a lot more enjoyment to it than the 2016 version, which wasn’t so horrible as to be forgettable but also only had so many great scenes to make it capable of being viewed. The reason why people are breathing a sigh of relief and happily anticipating the coming movie is that it’s a natural progression that they’ve been waiting for and a serious passing of the torch moment that a lot of us have been waiting on. Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things and Mckenna Grace of Annabelle Comes Home will be taking the lead as the young Ghostbusters that are attempting to assume the mantle in the movie, but one can only hope that we’ll see others that will accept the call as well since the four-man team that was so popular back in the beginning was seen to be the perfect number.
You could go ahead and say that any movie with Paul Rudd in it is made better just by his presence and you wouldn’t really be lying or completely stretching the truth. You might be laying too much on his shoulders to be honest but he’s still a presence that would be missed in a lot of movies and it seems that this kind of movie is something that’s right up his alley and could be something else that will cement his legacy even further as one of the funniest and most capable men in Hollywood. As Kevin Burwick from MovieWeb points out, even Rudd is insanely excited and he has every reason to be. Ghostbusters is a legacy movie that a lot of us grew up with and used as one of the best films to describe our childhood. It’s one of those movies that might have scared the hell out of us in some spots but still made us laugh and cheer for the good guys no matter how crass they were. It’s a classic, and the third installment should hopefully be just as good, especially with the cast it’s already gathered.
