Over the weekend I was reading a story about a guy who stopped watching movie trailers for an entire year. He said that it was the best move he’s ever made and that all the movies he saw (even the bad ones) seemed 100 times better because he hadn’t seen the trailers for t hem. So today I’d like to present an opportunity for all of you. It’s called the “Stop Watching Movie Trailers” movement. Our goal as a unified front is to stop watching movie trailers for the next month. Don’t worry, I’ll still be posting tons of trailers on this site for all of you who can’t handle the challenge. I just won’t be watching said trailers (I don’t think, I’m gonna try).
For the record, I’m taking nothing away from movie trailers. I think they are fantastic. However you must admit they do take away from your imagination of what a movie might be like. I think movie posters are great. Hearing about the plot is great. But watching an actual trailer certainly takes away much of the mystery. Personally I think this project is going to be damned near impossible to pull off.
Maybe we can start it slowly with a “don’t watch the trailer for one movie you want to see” and build from there. See how it feels. Did you like the movie better? Was it more of a surprise? I just think trailers themselves have become their own business and while there’s nothing wrong with this, it would be an interesting experiment to just go and watch a movie, period. No trailers. No hype. No expectations. Just natural born curiosity.
