Sometimes it seems like adults just want to be kids again, or at least let their kids experience the kind of fun that they can remember. Back in the day I’m betting a few of us imagined ourselves as the heroic Luke Skywalker jetting around in his landspeeder back on Tattoine, cruising to the space port with Obi-Wan Kenobi so that we could go save the galaxy. Maybe it was just me, I am kind of a Star Wars nerd. But the point of this is that back then our speeders were more likely couches or cardboard boxes we’d skillfully crafted to look like something that could have been a passable vehicle. Today’s kids don’t have to go that far. Now they can have a speeder that’s essentially just like the one that Luke had in Star Wars.
Kids will no doubt enjoy this iconic ride, and here’s a few reasons why.
It can seat two.
Two kids weighing no more than 130 pounds can have a blast in this speeder as they cruise down the sidewalk, perhaps pretending to be escaping Imperial troops as they attempt to join the Rebellion.
It can go up to 2 to 5 mph.
It’s not insanely fast but it can get up and go for a good distance. With a 12-volt rechargeable battery the speeder can go for a while without running down. Charging it after every use isn’t necessary but it’s actually recommended just to keep the battery from draining too much. The speeder can go up to 5 mph going forward and up to 2 mph in reverse.
It has the authentic look of the speeder from the original movie.
It might look a little scuffed and worn but that lends it the authenticity it needs to be seen as the genuine article. Adults might be a little envious of this considering that a lot of us didn’t get stuff like this when we were younger. We either had to make it or just imagine it.
The speeder features sound effects and the voices of favorite characters.
There’s a small bank of buttons that can allow kids to hear the sounds of the speeder as it coasts away and the voices of R2-D2 and C-3PO from the movie. Kids will have a lot of fun listening to the droids as they make their way down the block, perhaps even chiding C-3PO for being such a doomsayer.
The retail price is $499.99 and it can be pre-ordered.
Toys R Us has a limited stock on hand right now so it’s one purchase per family. What’s great though is that you can pre-order the speeder since it’s not due to hit stores until around early September.
I don’t know about anyone else but I’d definitely like to be a kid again when I see toys like this. It seems that innovations in kids toys are just getting better and better as the years go by. I’d ask what happened in our day, but then that might sound a little ridiculous considering that toys have been evolving for quite awhile.
