It’s hard to watch anyone cry, but especially those you see as strong characters in so many movies like Christian Bale. He’s been the Batman for crying out loud, this guy is supposed to be tough as nails and have the emotional stability of a superhero. But then again he’s an actor and this is something that helps him gain that much more depth and experience in his roles. In fact if he wasn’t able to cry when he needed to the chances are good that he wouldn’t be working for very long since his range would have been limited by dint of not being able to show much more emotion than it takes to get good and mad at someone before beating their brains in. Anger is something that comes easily to a lot of people but emotions such as sadness, despair, and even depression have to be worked at by those that don’t come across the naturally.
Whether he has demons in his past that allow this transition to happen is unknown, but he wears sorrow very well.
5. Equilibrium
In this movie the people are supposed to be as close to being emotionless blanks as possible. It allows them to live in harmony, peace, and a type of control that is just this side of creepy. When even one of them starts showing emotions it’s considered to be a punishable sin that can’t be forgiven, even by their highest-ranking clerics. Of course after the sorrow of what he’s gone through has passed anger swiftly takes over.

Betrayal is one of the many acts that can bring on the teeter-totter of emotion. One second a person might be mad enough to chew nails and the next they might be ready to bawl their eyes out like a child. Bale’s character in this film is hard to watch thanks to looking like a walking skeleton, but he’s also haunting in every emotion that crosses his face since it’s like watching Jack Skellington with a skin mask.
3. Rescue Dawn
You would expect to see joy on the face of a man that had spent such a long time in captivity, perhaps even gratefulness at the prospect of freedom and the chance to go home. But then you wouldn’t be taking into account the horrors he likely had to face while in captivity. The tears he would cry wouldn’t be just those of gratitude, but for what was lost in the struggle to stay alive.
2. Out of the Furnace
His brother was messed up in the head from what he’d seen during his deployment, but Bale’s character still loved him dearly. When he was taken from him there wasn’t much time for emotion, only a demand for payback that had to be answered. Once that deed was done however the anger finally abated, and the tide of sorrow was finally allowed to ride forth.
1. American Psycho
The guy is crying on the phone as he’s confessing to murder after murder after murder. You know what the most messed up thing about this movie really is? The twist at the end in which it seems like the guy that he murdered is in fact still alive.
Christian Bale is what I would call a creepy crier.
