Friday Light Nights will always go down as one of my top 20 all-time favorite sports movies. I think when you put it in the pantheon of greatest football movies ever you have to give it at least a top 7. Peter Berg’s wonderfully directed film brought us as close to a “real life” look at high school sports in Texas as we could possibly get. The movie eventually let to an extremely successful television series and gave us some insight into how far a town goes just to support its high school football team.
While the movie had incredible acting performances, actual football coverage, and realism in it, the score to the movie was fantastic. But let’s not forget the soundtrack as well. Perhaps one of my favorite uses of a song in a movie is during the scene where Permian is running out of the tunnel for the state championship. The music playing in the background is the song “New Noise” by Refused. To this day it’s a song that whenever it comes on my playlist when I’m at the gym, I’m instantly able to increase my bench press by at least 20 lbs.
If you want to get psyched right now, watch this clip. You won’t regret it.
