Milwaukee Brewers Had a Game of Thrones Night Which Got a Little Strange

When you take pop culture references and affix them to a different venue it’s usually a good idea to take a look at what effect you’ll be pushing first. The Milwaukee Brewers could have taken that advice and spared themselves a lot of awkwardness on game night. A lot of us love Game of Thrones but this inclusion of the popular HBO show was a little weird.

It was a fun attempt at a theme night to be honest but it still felt a little flat for those of us that really like the show. If it was a Star Wars night and they allowed people on the field after the game to engage in mock lightsaber battles it might have been okay, but this was a little, meh.

Game of Thrones is after all still on TV at the moment and is very emotionally charged as of now. People are waiting to see what happens each week, so long as the show isn’t hacked again, and are on pins and needles trying to figure out just what’s going to happen, who’s going to die, and how in the world anyone can still have faith in Cersei. Really, she’s like the worst ruler ever in the history of the show and somehow no one has revolted against her.

But while Game of Thrones is able to be mixed with a lot of things, baseball just doesn’t seem like the venue right now, at least not in the manner that the Brewers attempted. Maybe I’m out of line and maybe more people enjoyed it than I’ve heard, but so far it just seems like this was an awkward attempt at putting two things that just don’t go together in the same venue. Game of Thrones seems like it might fall in line with baseball in some regards, but in reality this attempt could have used so much more to make it even half of a success. Instead it seems like somebody just slapped this together and called it good.

This is what happens when you take something that people love and apply it to a sport like baseball. The MLB has it’s fair share of action and excitement but in regards to other sports it’s still rather tame at times, and GoT really needs a venue that’s quick and more dynamic. And before anyone gets bent out of shape I did not just call the MLB slow in so many words. The way this was handled though was slipshod at best and embarrassing at worst.

I can understand the desire to mix pop culture references. It’s a big trend and it goes on all the time, but at the same time it’s important to understand just how to do so fans will respond in a positive way. A lot of fans seemed to be scratching their heads at this rather than cheering their loudest as usual. To be quite honest the pictures were a little crazy. The white walker especially, yeesh.
