For those who have not been paying attention, it is interesting to note that the Dragon Ball franchise has been seeing a serious revival in recent times. The whole thing started when Toei Animation decided to revise Dragon Ball Z in 2009, which resulted in what is now called Dragon Ball Z Kai. However, it was not until 2015 that Toei Animation released Dragon Ball Super as a true continuation to Dragon Ball Z.
So far, Dragon Ball Super has covered a number of plotlines. For example, it covered Goku’s meeting with Beerus, the God of Destruction, which was a retelling of the events of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. Furthermore, it covered Freiza’s return via the Dragon Balls, which was a retelling of the events of Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F. However, Dragon Ball Super has since moved onto new plotlines with new stakes, as shown by how its current arc is focused on Goku as well as a rather eclectic collection of both friends and foes fighting in an inter-universal tournament to ensure the continuing survival of their universe.
As a result, since Dragon Ball Super has become so well-established, it is natural for people to wonder when Toei Animation would start making Dragon Ball Super movies. Technically, one could make an argument that both Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F counted as Dragon Ball Super movies because of their content, but considering the rather prominent Z in their names, that is something of a stretch. Regardless, it is interesting to note that there is now reason to believe that there could be a Dragon Ball Super movie coming sooner rather than later.
Why Is There Reason to Believe That a Dragon Ball Super Movie Is On the Way?
Recently, someone registered domain names such as dragonball2018 to dragonball2020. This is important because Toei Animation registered the domain names dragonball2013 and dragonball2015 when it was planning to release Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, which were released in 2013 and 2015. As a result, while there has been no official confirmation from Toei Animation that a Dragon Ball Super movie is coming sooner rather than later, the registration of those domain names seem like somewhat convincing evidence for that particular line of speculation.
Of course, there is no real way to tell whether the registration of those domain names means that a Dragon Ball Super movie is coming until Toei Animation makes the announcement. For that matter, there is no real way to tell whether it was actually Toei Animation that registered those domain names, though what little information that is known at this point in time does support that idea. As a result, interested individuals can do little besides waiting for more information, though there is a fair amount of speculation that can be had about what they can expect from the movies.
After all, the Dragon Ball setting is big enough to accommodate a wide range of stories with a wide range of characters, but it would be interesting to know whether a Dragon Ball Super movie would have an important role relative to the anime series that is running at the moment. There is still room for further escalation in Dragon Ball Super, but since they are already at the point where the existence of entire universes are at stake, one cannot help but wonder how long the anime series can continue until it has to come to a natural stop in its narrative.
