So sorry readers for no review last week!! A meatball sub exploded all over my laptop and it was unusable.
To make it short, I thought last week’s episode of How I Met Your Mother, entitled ‘The Exploding Meatball Sub’was lackluster at best and after having seen last night’s episode, it almost feels like it was just randomly thrown in to meet the required number of episodes.
Now, let’s move on to this week’s episode…
This episode was well acted, well scripted and well done. In ‘Hopeless’we got back to the Barney and his dad storyline and were also shown some hopeful foreshadowing for a couple I’d like to see get back together. (Ahem…Robin and Barney!)
The episode begins with a 6 year old Barney and his dad (John Lithgow, in a terribly awesome wig) just as his dad Jerry is about to leave him. His last words to his son ‘Don’t stop partying.’
Well the party hasn’t stopped for Mr. Stinson as we all know. Angry after receiving an invite from his father for a fishing trip with brother JJ, Barney sets out to find the old crazy Jerry again and invites him out for a night on the town. Along the way, he creates new personalities for everyone in the gang because their real personalities simply aren’t awesome enough.
After a hilariously well done gag with the various bar names in New York, the gang heads to ‘Hopeless.’Crazy Jerry comes out for a bit, or so we think, and everyone plays up their fake personas.
Marshall and Lily pretend to be in an open marriage and bet over who would get the most numbers with the result being sex in the bathroom. Robin is a professional scotch taster and Ted is Robin’s boyfriend who has a lot of things he can’t talk about.
When ‘˜Crazy Jerry’does come out, he is beyond humiliating. Tie around his head, he is dancing up a storm and Barney is almost excited to be embarrassed by his father. However, it turns out ‘˜Crazy Jerry’was all just an act as Barney’s dad was really trying to teach him a lesson; the party can’t go on forever. As we learn throughout the episode, a magician’s best friend is a drunk audience and Barney played the part well.
A few touching moments ensue. Most notably, on the way back to the suburbs, Barney admitting, ‘I love my life, but I’m not sure I like loving it’and ‘I’m too far gone, I’m broken.’It was a clear breakthrough for the character.
Jerry retorts with the advice that though settling down is hard the hint is finding the right girl.
‘Maybe I’ve met her already,’Barney replies.
Maybe he has met her already? As he mentioned earlier in the episode when answering Robin’s cry about having to pretend to date Ted … ‘I can’t have any single female friends lying around. My dad will be all ‘˜why don’t you marry Robin?’You guys were cute together. Deep down you know you were never happier than when you were with her.’
Though it was a fast cut after this statement, this was a loaded quote if I ever heard one. With a split second of recognition from Robin, here’s hoping for some foreshadowing.
The only thing that worries me is why was Robin so happy heading up the stairs with Ted? Is something going to happen there? We’ve been through their saga enough so I’m hoping no, but something seemed a bit odd.
In a press release announced by CBS Tuesday, it seems that the two (Robin and Barney) will be bonding at the wedding where Ted plays best man but they’ll also run into Nora. Is it possible she could be who Barney was talking about?
I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Quips of the night (and as per usual they are full of Barneyisms):
- ‘Ooh hold on let me check my personality. Oh no turns out I would never do that in a million years’— Barney re: the fishing trip
- “My own father is anti-awesometic” – Barney
- I can’t have any single female friends lying around. My dad will be all ‘˜why don’t you marry Robin?’You guys were cute together. Deep down you know you were never happier than when you were with her.’
So what did you think about this weeks episode of How I Met Your Mother? Did you enjoy Crazy Jerry? Should John Lithgow get another Emmy for guest appearance this year? Do you think Robin and Barney will get back together?

This was an awesome episode! And I think you forgot the "band" opening singing!
And the wedding is so totally Barney/Robin's. So many clues pointing to it!
Ah you are right!! Thank you! I did forget the "band" opening singing!! That was fantastic! :)
Possibly. It just seemed odd that she was smiling so much when she didn't know she would see him again and that's why Lily questioned it. I'm not sure??
According to imdb, that character (played by Michael Trucco) will be back next episode so I guess we will have to wait and see!
I hope Robin and her crush get together, even if it is for a few episodes. I would love to see more of Michael Trucco on the show. Oh wait, Ted did say "More on that later". Nice. :)
