More than anything, the IF movie cast has got movie audiences excited about John Krasinski’s next feature project. The live-action/animated fantasy comedy packs a star-studded ensemble cast, from comedians to action and drama stars. Although credited as an original screenplay, several audience comments have likened IF to Cartoon Network’s Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.
IF, an abbreviation for Imaginary Friends, follows a young girl, Bea, who, after a traumatic experience, discovers she can see people’s childhood Imaginary Friends. When she also discovers her neighbor has the same ability, they try to reconnect these Imaginary Friends with their long-lost, grown-up friends. IF is John Krasinski’s return to the director’s chair after a four-year absence. To help breathe life into the characters, here are the IF movie cast and the characters they play.
Cailey Fleming as Bea
17-year-old Cailey Fleming leads the IF movie cast, playing the main protagonist, Bea. With the ability to see people’s imaginary friends, Bea decides to assist, with the help of her neighbor, Cal, in reconnecting the IFs to their human counterparts. Cailey Fleming, whose acting career began at 8, made her film debut playing a younger Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015). Her breakout and most prominent role was as Judith Grimes in The Walking Dead (2018–2022).
Ryan Reynolds as Cal
Ryan Reynolds plays Cal, Bea’s older neighbor with a similar ability to see IFs. Besides being one of the movie’s producers, Reynolds delivers an unparalleled performance as a supporting character. His character adds to the film’s humor with his sarcastic, stone-faced delivery. Besides his numerous works in comedy, Ryan Reynolds is mostly known for his portrayal of the Marvel Comics character Wade Wilson/Deadpool.
Steve Carell as Blue
Leading the IF movie voice cast is actor and comedian Steve Carell, who voices the character Blue. He’s the first Imaginary Friend Bea sees. He’s the biggest IF in the movie, with a purple furry skin. IF is the first time John Krasinski and Steve Carell are working together since The Office. Cast as Michael Scott, NBC’s The Office is one of Carell’s most prominent roles as an actor. The Academy Award-nominated and multi-Emmy-nominated actor is one of Hollywood’s most successful comedy stars.
Matt Damon as Sunny
Academy Award-winning actor Matt Damon also joins the IF movie cast, voicing the character Sunny. Like its name, Sunny is a sunflower IF. Damon is no stranger to being a voice actor, having voiced several movie characters over the years. Besides a cameo in Drive-Away Dolls (2024), the last time movie audiences watched Matt Damon on the big screen was in Christopher Nolan’s 2023 Oppenheimer movie.
Louis Gossett Jr. as Lewis
Lewis might not be the biggest imaginary friend in the movie, but he’s one of the oldest and most mature. Lewis sits with Cal and Bea at the table to listen to the IF’s petitions. The character is voiced by the recently deceased actor Louis Gossett Jr. The actor died on March 29, 2024, at a rehabilitation center at the age of 87. With a career spanning over five decades, Gossett Jr. starred in several notable movies throughout his acting career. Louis Gossett Jr.’s last starring roles in film and television were Watchmen (2019), Kingdom Business (2022–2023), and The Color Purple (2023).
Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Blossom
English actress and filmmaker Phoebe Waller-Bridge is also on the IF movie cast. Credited as one of its voice actors, Waller-Bridge voices a humanoid ladybug. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is more popularly known for creating the British TV series Fleabag (2016–2019) and playing its title character. Waller-Bridge also played Helena Shaw in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. She’s also a co-writer and executive producer of Killing Eve (2018–2022).
Emily Blunt as Unicorn
John Krasinski’s real-life wife, actress Emily Blunt, is also one of the IF movie cast. Blunt voices the Unicorn character. Since making her film debut in the 2004 My Summer of Love, Emily Blunt has had a successful acting career. Her last movie appearances were in the 2023 Oppenheimer and Pain Hustlers movies.
Jon Stewart as Robot
American comedian, television host, and actor Jon Stewart also joins the IF movie cast as one of its voice actors. Stewart voices the imaginary friend created as a Robot. The Twenty-two-time Primetime Emmy Awards winner and Grammy winner is popularly known for hosting the Comedy Central late-night talk and satirical news TV program The Daily Show. Jon Stewart hosted the show from 1999 to 2015 and returned as host in 2024 after Trevor Noah’s exit.
John Krasinski as Marshmallow
John Krasinski isn’t only behind the camera but also voices one of the IFs, the Marshmallow, with his eyes always falling off. Krasinski is also credited as Bea’s father and would appear on-screen briefly. Krasinski has had a successful career as an actor and filmmaker. Besides his work in The Office, he also starred in his directed film, A Quiet Place (2018), and in flashback scenes in the sequel. He also portrayed the Marvel Comics superhero character Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic.
Awkwafina as Bubble
Actress, rapper, and comedian Awkwafina is also part of the IF movie cast, voicing the Bubble IF character. With growing credits in movies since her breakout role in Crazy Rich Asians, Awkwafina has become one of the most sought-after voice actors in Hollywood. Having a busy year in 2023 with five movies, Awkwafina began 2024 voicing the Zhen character in Kung Fu Panda 4.
Keegan-Michael Key as Slime
Actor, comedian, and filmmaker Keegan-Michael Key is also one of IF’s voice cast. He voices the green blob character, known as Slime, and is one of the movie’s supporting IF characters. Keegan-Michael Key is known for his sketch series Key & Peele (2012-2015), which he did with fellow comedian Jordan Peele. In the last few years, Key has starred in more voice roles than acting roles. However, he played the Police Chief in the 2023 Wonka.
Other Supporting IF Movie Cast
With more notable actors joining the IF movie cast lineup, it is arguably one of the largest star-studded ensemble casts in the last decade. Actor Sam Rockwell voices the character of the Superhero Dog, with Ryan Reynolds’ wife, actress Blake Lively voicing the Octocat. Legendary actors George Clooney and Bradley Cooper are also part of IF’s cast, voicing the Spaceman and Ice characters, respectively.
