If you were around in the late 80s and early 90s, you will have heard of ‘Saved by the Bell’. This popular American sitcom, which aired on NBC between 1989 and 1993, was a rehash of ‘Good Morning, Miss Bliss’, a Disney Channel series. It was about a group of friends at high school and focused on comedic situations. However, ‘Saved by the Bell’ also touched on many serious topical issues. The series was created by Sam Bobrick, and it starred Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Mario Lope, Dustin Diamond, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Elizabeth Berkley, Lark Voorhies, Ed Alonzo, and Dennis Haskins.
The series was hugely popular, and fans have been begging for a reboot of the series for years. It was recently announced that a reboot of ‘Saved by the Bell’ is finally in the making, which is fantastic news for fans of the show and an opportunity for a new generation of viewers to enjoy the series. NBC announced that the series is returning, and that original cast members Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley will rejoin the cast, says The Sun. Lopez will reprise his role as AC Slater, while Berkley is returning to play Jessie for a second time. It makes sense that two of the main characters from the original version of the series have been invited to join the reboot.
What is more surprising is that neither Mark-Paul Gosselaar nor Tiffani-Amber Thiessen has been contacted about returning for the reboot. In the original, Gosselaar played the lead role of Zack Morris, while Thiessen played his love interest Kelly. Apparently, Mark-Paul Gosselaar has been interested in taking part in a reboot for some time, and he had heard on the grapevine that there was the possibility of it happening. However, he woke up on the morning that the news was released about the reboot completely in the dark. He has said that he has not been approached about reprising his role and that he did not know that the plans were so far along.
It is particularly surprising that he has not been contacted as his character will appear in the reboot. Current reports suggest that his character, Zack, has become the Governor of California in the reboot of the sitcom. Therefore, this leaves the question open as to who will play this role in the reboot. Gosselaar, who is now 45, has said that Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, also 45, has not been contacted about the reboot, as far as he is aware. Furthermore, he told TMZ that he has no knowledge of any other cast members from the original having been contacted by the network or the producers of the series. Thiessen and other cast members have not yet commented on this situation.
Although Gosselaar is disappointed to have been snubbed by the series, he isn’t in desperate need of the work right now as he is currently starring in the ABC sitcom series ‘Mixed-is’, which is the prequel series of ‘Black-ish’. He also played the lead role in the 2019 series ‘The Passage’. Mark-Paul Gosselaar has remained in demand as an actor since his time on ‘Saved by the Bell’, which was the series that shot him to fame and propelled his career. He is known for playing the roles of Detective John Clark Jr. in ‘NYPD Blue’ and Peter Bash in ‘Franklin & Bash’. He also starred in the 2016 series ‘Pitch’. Furthermore, he has also established himself in the film industry. His most famous film role was Cooper Frederickson in the 1998 film ‘Dead Man on Campus’. Other films in which he has appeared include ‘White Wolves: A Cry in the Wild II’, ‘The St. Tammany Miracle’, ‘Kounterfeit’, ‘Heist’, and ‘Precious Cargo’. In his personal life, he has been married twice and has four children.
Likewise, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen has also enjoyed success in her career since the end of ‘Saved by the Bell’. She is currently starring as Lori Mendoza in ‘Alexa & Katie’. Other television series in which she has had major roles include playing Kelly Malone in ‘Beverley Hills, 90210′ and roles in ‘White Collar’, ‘What About Brian’, and ‘Fastlane’. Like Gosselarr, Thiessen has also had roles in films. Some of these include ‘Hollywood Ending’, ‘Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th’, and ‘Son in Law’. Most recently, she had a role in the 2008 film ‘Cyborg Soldier’.
While her professional life has been a success, her personal life has experienced many ups and downs. Between 1992 and 1994 she dated actor David Faustino, but the relationship ended after they had moved in together. She was then in a relationship with David Strickland, who sadly committed suicide in 1999. Between 2001 and 2003, she was engaged to actor Richard Ruccolo, but this relationship also came to an end.
Eventually, she married actor Brady Smith, and the couple went on to have two children together; daughter Renn and son Fisher. Sadly, she continued to experience problems in her personal life as two of her closest friendships came to an end. She was once the maid of honor for actress Jennie Garth, her 90210 co-star. She was also close friends with Tori Spelling, who also co-starred in 90210. Sadly, her friendships with both women have come to an end for unrelated reasons.
The revival of ‘Saved by the Bell’ is not set to launch until 2020. There are plans that this will be available on Peacock, which is a new streaming service that NBC is launching in April 2020. Viewers will have to wait and see who else is included in this cast along with Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley. As there is still some time before the revival is released, it is likely that more information about the reboot of ‘Saved by the Bell’ will be released over the coming months.
