The Magicians Get Some Divine Elimination

The Magicians Get Some Divine Elimination

I know I complained about the filler episode last week, but I see now why the writers chose to pack everything in this week. What a roller coaster! I was rooting for Julia, and then Alice, and then screaming at both! Really, after Jane the Virgin’s twist, I can only handle so much!

The antics began with Martin’s curse on the throne. A hilarious sequence where the high kings and queens try to kill each other out of pure paranoia. Penny saves the day with a classic: stop-the-heart-temporarily, and revive it with adrenaline. So no one dies, yet.

Meanwhile, Marina helps Julia and Martin. She chants the summoning spell to lure Raynard, but he follows her home. Martin, who I was beginning to like, takes his time undoing the shields on Marina’s home. Poor Marina watches in horror as Raynard turns her cat inside out and eats one of her fingers. It’s horrifying, just like the finale of season one. When Martin finally gets through her shields he freezes the evil god just in time for everything to go wrong.

That’s right, Alice and the crew steal Martin back to Fillory to kill him while Alice is still god powered. She does a lot of damage, and I’m at a loss, who do I want to win? I did want Martin to get revenge for Julia. Just to prove he’s the worst, Martin disappears.

Penny drops Julia back on Earth, and she is left alone to discover Marina, dead.

So we have the only slow point in the episode, and of course Quentin decides to remind Alice that he is still in love with her. It’s cute, and awkward and makes the rest of the episode much more heartbreaking.

They find Martin and Alice battles him for one last time. She tries to do the spell, but it’s too much and she explodes into pure magic, just like her brother. Just when Martin thinks he won, she comes back (also like her brother) and reveals it was all per the plan. Now Alice is even more powerful. She eliminates Martin and now she’s the real threat.

So few shows actually pull a Game of Thrones, so I didn’t think all four would die, and I was right. Quentin must use his demon to kill Alice. It’s sad, but obviously temporary as the trailer for next week reveals that Q wants to bring Alice back.

“Divine Elimination” was a solid, action packed episode. I hope the writers can find a balance of filler and action. I binge watched the first season, so it was easy to move through the slow episodes. However, maintaining an audience is necessary for any network series, so the more balance the better.

Favorite line of the episode “Alice has gone full Harry Potter part seven / eight over there.” -Elliot, he can do no wrong.
