In my continuing saga of giving praise to movies that use music perfectly, today we’re going with “Lunatic Fringe” by Red Rider used in the movie Vision Quest. P.S. the song “Only the Young” by Journey is also incredibly well used in this movie but let’s get back to the 1981 classic rock song “Lunatic Fringe.” For those of you who have seen Vision Quest then you know what I’m talking about. For those of you who haven’t, leave the room right now and go watch Vision Quest. It’s one of my favorite movies of all-time and it’ll always be. It’s not only about wrestling (which by the way is great in this film), it’s about “growing up” and the difficulties of trying to find one’s path in life (particularly at a young age, which is even more complicated).
Vision Quest is definitely considered a sports movie and in my lifetime I’ve never seen a song work better in workout scenes or just scenes to “jack you up” than Lunatic Fringe in this movie. The song is used every single time Louden Swain (Matthew Modine) is working out and it’s used as he’s jump roping right before his final match of the movie against Shute (who by the way is one of sports movies best villains of all-time).
In any event, here’s a video. You’ll see, it’s greatness.
