The Lord of the Rings movies are among the highest grossing series of all time. What’s more, the original book series have sold over 150 million copies since they were first published back in 1955. So it’s fair to say that most of us know Middle Earth, its heroes and its villains pretty well.
The fantasy land of Middle Earth is a world away from life as we know it. They don’t have cars and they don’t have computers, but they do have magic, dragons and elves. They also don’t have the internet, social media or iPhones to help stay in touch with each other. It would’ve been a huge help if Frodo could have kept the rest of the Fellowship updated on his progress towards Mordor using Whatsapp.
And perhaps if Gandalf had been able to use Facebook, he might just have let everyone know of his return and resurrection much sooner. It’s only when you look at the huge differences our modern technology could have made to a story like this that you realise what a vital feature of our daily lives it has become. However, we’re not sure we mortal humans could beat the orcs with our smartphones and Wi-Fi alone.
It’s pretty fun to imagine just how the story covered in The Lord of the Rings trilogy might play out if it were set on Earth as we know it in the 21st century. Here, we imagine just what Frodo, Gandalf and even Sauron may well be saying if they had the social media accounts we all use today.
