The Originals may have started as The Vampire Diaries spinoff back in 2013, but it has since become a great story of its own. We’ve seen the rise and fall of the vampire-werewolf horror genre, and yet The Originals is still here even though this season will be its last. It might be too soon to tell and as much as we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, we wouldn’t be surprised if The CW orders some type of spinoff for this show as well. Our fascination for the undead will always be there, and with the premiere of The Originals‘ 5th and final season, we can’t help but think that this can’t be the end. Either way, it looks like it’s going to be a promising end to a great series, and here are a few things that we learned from the premiere.
There’s another time jump.
When season 4 started, the series jumped about 5 years from when season 3 ended. Now we’re looking at a 7-year jump into season 5. We’re guessing that the emphasis is really on the value of time when it comes to vampires. 7 years is like nothing when you’re immortal after all. Unfortunately, we’re not immortal, so 7 years may seem like a long time for a series to take on. At least there are some benefits to it, which we will touch upon further down.
Everyone is still scattered.
So it’s been 7 years and the separation situation hasn’t been resolved. The Mikaelsons still have The Hollow, which is forcing everyone to be separated. If you remember from the season 4 finale, the Mikaelson siblings had to divide and quarter The Hollow in order to defeat it. They can’t break this separation; otherwise, the youngest member of the family dies. And it seems like they haven’t found a way around it 7 years later.
Klaus and Hope are estranged.
Obviously they can’t be together physically because of The Hollow, but there should’ve still been a way to keep in touch somehow and develop a relationship. Klaus seemed to be the one that cut the ties. But from what we picked up from the premiere, Hope might be trying for a dangerous reunion.
Marcel finally proposes with 3 objects and a question.
It was probably one of the best TV proposals we’ve seen in a while. Marcel’s proposal to Rebekah was the big finale of their forbidden love for each other. Alas, Rebekah declined the offer, leaving Marcel in New York, probably for a long while. We’re not sure when we’ll see these two together again, but we hope marriage happens for them before the end.
New characters are everywhere.
There are a few new characters in season 5, and it’s understandable given that we’re jumping so far ahead of time. Hope is grown now at 14 years old, and there’s a new actress playing her as well. She’s not a happy camper, but what can you expect when you’re the reason why your family can’t be together? She’s also falling for a new character, Roman, whom we know not much of at this point. Then there’s Declan, a new love interest for Hayley. We don’t know where this new love interest is headed, but we’ll definitely tune in next week to find out more.
