Now that Disney has purchased 21st Century Fox it’s important to take stock of everything that came with it, and Conan the Barbarian is one of those assets. He’s been a part of the MCU for a long time now and could potentially be seen to make a return to the cinematic universe. Keep in mind that his world, the same as that in the MCU, was far different in his time, but it does follow along the timeline that has been kept and updated continually. His world was essentially created when Atlantis was swallowed by the sea, a natural disaster that had something to do with Galactus the world devourer coming into being within the universe. His time upon the world was memorable all on its own, but was easily forgotten when Thor and Hercules came to earth. So yes, Conan does predate their arrival to earth, which is kind of cool to think about.
There’s no doubt a lot to think over and talk about with the purchase of 21st Century Fox still going over but the idea that Conan could come back to the big screen leaves some people giddy with excitement and others kind of shaking their heads asking “why?”. We all know what happened when Conan was given an attempt at a reboot, and while Jason Momoa has come a long way since then he kind of failed to deliver on the promised blockbuster back in 2011. Personally I don’t think it was all him, I really think it had to do more with the story and the insane pacing of the movie. If they’d stuck closer to source material and done a remake instead of a reboot then perhaps it would have gone over a little better.
And honestly, having Conan being such a tough little bugger as a kid, to take on a small group of hardened berserkers and come out without serious injury is kind of hard to fathom. Yes we know his legend, he’s always been one of the toughest people out there, but as a kid he was still largely unsure of himself and his place in the world. A lot of folks tend to prefer the Schwarzenegger version, in which he was forced into menial labor until he was old enough to put into the fighting pits. Obviously the original movie was a bit hard to fathom as well in certain areas, but it was more complete. It gave more of a background on Conan than just bringing him out as a precocious young Cimmerian that could kill several grown men as a child. In other words the original had a more realistic feel to it.
But now that Disney owns the rights, or so everyone thinks, to Conan, there’s at least a chance we could see him make a comeback to the big screen, which would be kind of cool. Perhaps Arnold would reprise the role one more time before passing the torch onto the next person, a sort of rite of passage that could take place in order to secure a legacy. It might even be able to be fit into the MCU’s normal lineup, who knows?
