It seems like Kathy Lee Gifford would be most interested in going it alone in a solo act on the Today Show. After getting over the resentment that came when her co-host Hoda Kotb was sent to cover the Olympics it seems that Gifford finally started having a good time on her own and has decided that she wants to keep it that way. Chances are that Hoda won’t be agreeing to it that easily but it all comes down to the fact that ratings could be up if Hoda was no longer a part of the show along with Gifford. In fact the ratings did go up after Gifford began to take in stride the fact that she was on her own.
She’s expressed that she misses former co-host Regis Philbin but has also gone on to tell her friend and anyone that will listen that she is confident that she could take on the show all on her own since she had a good time doing it while Hoda was away. The kind of feud this might spark, if it hasn’t already, would no doubt be kind of nasty since hosting a daily talk show is a lot of exposure and the kind of fame that a person doesn’t give up on all that easily. There might be somewhere for Hoda to go if the network does give into this idea but chances are she might still be a little sore upon leaving simply because it seems as though Gifford doesn’t need her and isn’t shy about admitting it. When thinking about daily shows that have co-hosts one has to wonder at times if everything seems as copacetic as it does on the show when the cameras are turned off. From all accounts thus far that’s been proven to not be the case since the feuds that have gone on in the past among various co-hosts have spilled into the news often enough that people have gotten an idea that people onscreen are just barely holding it together.
If the ratings are any indication though Gifford has found out that she can do this all on her own and that Hoda would only be slowing her down. That seems rather harsh to say but if the truth is known the ratings are sometimes all that matter while the popularity of an individual on a show is sometimes secondary to what people want. A lot of viewers are willing to overlook the replacement or omission of a co-host simply because the remaining host can take care of matters just fine. It’s kind of petty, even to the point that it might seem like Gifford could have been planning this for some time in the back of her mind, but it’s also kind of ingenious in a way since without anyone else to worry about taking the spotlight Gifford would finally be able to do and say just about anything she wanted so long as it’s within reason.
It’d be interesting to see this happen.
