Jedi vs. Sith: Who’s The Most Powerful?

In light of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker coming out soon we thought it might be interesting to take a look and really see just who might agree or disagree on just which powerful Force-users belong in the upper echelon and which ones, despite being impressive, are kind of lacking in one or two areas. For the sake of this article though we’ll be going over the Jedi and Sith that we’ve seen in the movies and those that have been well-established since otherwise we’d likely be writing yet another book on the subject among many that have already come along. Movie Force-users such as Yoda, Darth Sidious, Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, Rey, Kylo Ren, Count Dooku, and yes, even Anakin Skywalker before his turn to the dark side, have mesmerized us with their abilities to no end since they’ve shown us that with a great knowledge of the Force added to the combat skills they’ve learned that there’s a reason that Star Wars has centered around them so often. There is a great deal more to this universe than the Jedi and Sith, but they are without a doubt the most interesting bunch around since despite their extraordinary abilities they are still people that deal with very real issues. But since we won’t be getting into that, we’ll get right to who could possibly beat who.

Yoda

It’s been seen that Yoda only fights when he needs to and as such, pitting him against his fellow Jedi would be kind of hard to do just because he wouldn’t be inclined to harm them. But he wouldn’t be above disciplining them in his own manner, meaning he might give them a lesson in how to use the Force to disarm an opponent and hold them immobile. One has to remember that Yoda is far more capable than many of the Jedi thanks to his centuries-long lifespan that has allowed him to unravel so many different things concerning the Force. When it comes to the Sith though, it’s been seen that Darth Sidious is his match, though it’s a popular opinion that Yoda could take Darth Maul since Maul is more rage and aggression, which the diminutive Jedi can counter quite easily. Plus, Yoda held his own against Sidious, which means that it would take a more powerful Sith than Maul to take him down. When it comes to Darth Vader however it seems that Yoda might have a much harder fight, but some think that he would still win the day. As far as Kylo Ren goes, yeah, it’d be like a seasoned veteran taking on a young, brash newcomer, Yoda would handle him easily.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

The fact that he can beat Maul is already established, but while Obi-Wan is a legend there are simply some things he cannot do. Taking on Kylo Ren would, as with Yoda, seem to be a thing of ease, but taking on Sidious would be beyond him, as Yoda even said it would be. Against Darth Vader we saw what happened in A New Hope, but we also saw that Kenobi came to same conclusion that Yoda did against Sidious, that this wasn’t the fight that needed to be won. Standing against his fellow Jedi it’s been seen that he could eventually take Anakin since his former Padawan fought with more anger and rage and eschewed tactics, but up until the ‘high ground’ moment the two were evenly matched. Against Luke it would more of a hypothetical since one would have to think just which version of Luke, young or seasoned, that Obi-Wan would fight. In many cases though Obi-Wan would stand a chance of taking the fight. Against Rey there’s no question, it’d be a beatdown, or at the very least a lesson learned.

Luke Skywalker

So thanks to The Last Jedi a lot of people now think that Rey could take Luke Skywalker since she had him on the ground during their impromptu duel. But think of it this way, Luke was being defensive, he hadn’t gone on the offense and he wasn’t letting loose. He’s lost against Vader, couldn’t really stand up to Sidious, and it stands to reason that he’d get stomped by Yoda and Obi-Wan, but he toyed with Kylo, from a remote distance no less, and didn’t just yank the lightsaber out of Rey’s hands as he could have. The fact that Luke showed such restraint tends to let people know that had he unleashed what he had against her, there’s no hope for Rey and she would fall as Kylo would. As far as Maul goes, this is where things get hazy since in the current era there’s a good chance that he could beat Maul, and in the EU canon there’s no doubt he could beat Maul, but if you want the truth, the only ones that decide just who can beat who are the writers.

I know I didn’t add in Snoke, but apart from Force capability imagine that Yoda and Sidious could stomp him, while Luke and Vader would put up a very good fight and likely win a good portion of the time. As for Rey, well, with the writers on her side there’s obviously not a lot she can’t do. But in the EU canon, she’d still be a Padawan.
