Jane the Virgin Review: You’re Stressing Me Out

Jane the Virgin

What do you do when you’re stressed out? Perhaps you drink herbal tea, try deep breathing exercises, treat yourself to a spa day or an intense workout. If you’re on Jane the Virgin, you try a variation of all of the above until the stress simply compounds. That’s what you’re not supposed to do, and you’re definitely not supposed to take your stress out on everyone else. Yet when you open yourself up to others, the stress isn’t as weighty.

Michael has set his mind on a career in law, but he has a very different studying method than Jane does. Jane’s finally done with her novel based on Alba’s life, but worries about how Alba will take certain liberties Jane took with the fiction portions of the novel. Luckily Alba understands that it’s not a biography, so Jane is at least relieved where that stress is concerned. However, sharing her feelings with Michael doesn’t actually help him relax before the LSATs. Jane is also worried about Mateo since his vocabulary isn’t as advanced as some of the other kids in their Mommy & Me class. Put all these problems together, and Jane’s stress level is through the roof. Deep breathing doesn’t help, yoga doesn’t help, and the essential oils Jane takes make Michael break out like a pufferfish. Stress brings more stress, and before you know it Mateo is screaming in a car, in bumper-to-bumper traffic with his rewrote-her-entire novel mother and his late-for-law-school-interview stepfather. On an impromptu camping trick Michael and Jane are finally able to reconcile with their mutual fears of failure. They support each other and are even pleasantly surprised when Mateo says his first word.

Rogelio is very excited about moving forward with a new baby and a new career. If only he could get either one off the ground. He continuously delays production on the final taping of his telenovela “Tiago” with rewrite upon rewrite. Since there are romantic thoughts on both their parts, Rogelio and Darci decide to give dating a try. The problem is that Darci is hypercritical of Rogelio’s every move on their date. It’s discouraging to Rogelio considering he wanted to have a child with this woman, but Jane helps put things in perspective. Darci self-sabotages for fear of being burned, especially since Rogelio has such a strong connection with Xiomara. Xiomara has happily moved on though, and now Rogelio finally feels ready to do the same. Rogelio’s breakthrough with Darci breaks his block for a fitting “Tiago” series finale, getting his personal and professional life back on track.

Instead of hiding the addendum to Emilio’s will, Rafael plans to be honest about it with the courts. Once that happens, his financial situation is going to drastically change. Jane is fine with that, but Petra is not. Using Jane’s grudge as leverage, Petra enlists Catalina as apart of her plan to get her hands on the Solano fortune. Petra only needs Rafael out of the office for one night. That night turns into a 24 hour adventure with Catalina with a guru. The experience opens Rafael and Catalina. Relaxed and moved, Rafael confides in Catalina about his paternity, while Catalina reveals that she makes herself scares around Mateo and the twins because she can’t have kids. Catalina goes two for two with the honesty by revealing Petra to Rafael. Catching Petra in the middle of spying opens up the can of emotions Petra’s been struggling with. Rafael can’t be angry with Petra after she reveals how untrustworthy she finds the world, and how devastated she is that she cannot connect with her own daughters. Petra needs to go to a therapist. Rafael has too much to help with to focus on Catalina, especially since he’s only ever 75% sure when she’s telling the truth.

If only getting psychological help in this world came without consequence. Anezka and Scott, who are now a full-fledged item (which I kind of root for because hey, even sneaky people need love). They are out to get whatever Patra has, and will do so as a happily married couple, and with the addendum to Emilio Solano’s will.

Talk about a can of worms. Do you think Jane should give yoga a second chance to reduce her stress level?
